Something really odd happened the other day. I was walking down a wide sidewalk at about 5AM on my way to PT when a Korean SUV drove down the sidewalk along side of me at a high speed and then jumped the curb and turned left into a major highway. When the vehicle turned into the highway it smashed into the side of a ROK Army armored personnel carrier that was traveling in a early morning convoy. The driver was probably drunk and he appeared to survive the crash and the ROK Army was there trying pull the guy out of the vehicle. I just shrugged and went on to PT.
Looking back, I realized something significant. An SUV speeding down the sidewalk beside of me didn’t even cause me to flinch. Then the vehicle smashing into a armored personnel carrier caused little reaction or notice from me. Now imagine this same scenario occurring back in the US. I would be yelling at anyone speeding down a sidewalk by me. And then a vehicle smashing into an APC would be a sight to see. But here I could care less. When a speeding vehicle crashing into a tank fails to catch my attention, I definitely know I have been in Korea to long.

That’s life in the ROK. It seems like so much more happens. I came up with this time scale
US time = ROK time
Day = Week
Week = Month
1 Year tour = 3 year tour
Extended tour = So, who’s president now?
