Watching the Super Bowl in Korea is quite a different experience compared to being in the states. First of all 2ID gave everyone the day off to watch the Super Bowl which was nice because the Super Bowl started about 0830 in the morning. So that is a major down side watching the game that early, however like any true football fan we had to have a tailgate party to celebrate the Super Bowl. So at 5AM we were outside in the cold, didn’t need any beer coolers this way, and began our BBQing on the grill.
I can’t remember the last time I had a buzz going that early in the morning; probably college, so I must be getting old. At game time we watched the game in what is known as a quanset
hut “crackhouse”. If you have served in the Second Infantry Division you probably know what I am talking about. We packed the room and had a great time watching the game. It would have been better if the game didn’t suck so bad. That was probably the most boring close game I have seen in quite a while. Was it just me or did it seem like Philadelphia didn’t even want to win that game?
Another downside of watching the Super Bowl in Korea is that you cannot see any of the commercials because AFN does not air commercials due to their licensing agreement with the TV studios. However, after reading on the internet how bad the commercials were I am probably better off for not seeing them.
All in all watching the Super Bowl in Korea was an interesting experience, but just like anything else in Korea it is all what you make of it. Things here are different, even watching the Super Bowl.
