In Australia, widows of service members often wear their husband's medals to veterans reunions and memorial services. I've heard of the oldest child also wearing such medals in lieu of the widow. In the case of widows or a surviving child, I believe the medals are worn on the right side, as opposed to the left (officially earned) side. Not sure if this is the custom in other Commonwealth countries.
