Joe's side represents what I thought of yesterday when reading Cumings.....that they are the side arguing for exactly the opposite of what a similar segment of the thinking world advocated with South Africa...

....See....back then....pressuring South Africa into "submission" over aparthied was progressive. Today, the progressive thing to do with North Korea is to send it large amounts of oil to meet its energy needs and see what other material and financial support you can give Pyongyang in the name of diplomacy in the hope that one day it decides of its own free will to become a nation more in line with global standards...

It is ironic that you say shoot first diplomacy considering North Korea is once again doing the shooting:

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/chronicle/5029529.html

I for one can't think of one Bush administration official advocating a shoot first policy with North Korea like you claim. I can name Democrats with a shoot first policy though:

http://rokdrop.com/2007/01/21/perry-advocates-bombing-north-korea-again/

Then you advocate South Korean diplomacy can you list what this has achieved?

Let's see unmonitored aid to North Korea has allowed Kim Jong-il to expand his military, develop advanced tactical ballistic missiles, test a nuclear bomb and feed his military . The unconditional aid has done little to stop the suffering of the North Korean people, refugees continue to flood into China where many are now modern day comfort women while the South Korean government and the rest of the world ignores them. I could go on and on about the "success" of the Sunshine Policy if you like.

Now before you accuse me of being a warmonger, not once on this blog have I ever advocated starting a war with North Korea. I have advocated promoting human rights in North Korea as well having monitored not unconditional aid to North Korea among a host of other ideas that do not involve war.

Your "submission" claims are quite misinformed as well considering the ROK Army was advocating to take over the entire Northern Iraq sector including Kirkuk before President Roh forced the ROK Army to stay cooped up inside their base outside Irbil. ROK Army soldiers and some in the media have come out in the past condemning Roh's policy of doing nothing in Iraq:

http://rokdrop.com/2007/03/20/totten-on-the-rok-army-in-iraq/

Your submission quote is even more humorous considering President Roh campaigned on a more equal relationship with the US yet you are calling him an American stooge. Korea is in Iraq and Afghanistan in hopes of securing lucrative contracts and maintaining the "spirit of the alliance". They did not submit as you claim. Last I checked the ROK is an independent country and not a colony as you seem to suggest.

I have also clearly layed out already who the "some people may believe that it is America’s fault" are:

http://rokdrop.com/2007/08/02/blame-america-campaign-picks-up-steam/

I have been able to debunk all your arguments and didn't even have to resort name calling. You are obviously out of your league here and may want to think about sticking to reading the Hankyoreh or something similar instead of the ROK Drop.

Just on a side note, about the apparent criticizing of South Korean aid to North Korea, let's not forget that they are one people. Not everyone has America's policy of shoot first. Some people truly do believe there are alternatives, like, well, diplomacy.

Of course, in this pro-American rich article, I don't see it mentioned that the United States has always pressured Korea into "submission", to be blunt. I imagine without that pressure, Korea wouldn't have been there in the first place, hence, why some people may believe that it is America's fault, not that I am one of those people.

I just think your article is a little too sarcastic in some areas, and in some others, you make yourself out to be nothing more than an arrogant asshole.

"If the United States, wasn't overly involved in the Republic of Korea, then the South Koreans wouldn't be blaming the United States, for the hostage crisis in Afghanistan. The Korean war ended nearly 55 years ago. The Koreans in the south, are now living better than the average American. Koreans here in the south, are EDUCATED, while a lot of young Americans have no education. Young South Korean children know more about a computer than our over-paid government bureaucrats know. If you can give me one good reason why the United States, should have ground troops in the Republic of Korea, I'll sell you the Han River Bridge. AND PLEASE, DON'T tell me we have ground troops in the Republic of Korea, to stop a threat from the DPRK..WHAT THREAT??? Wake up AMERICA!!! Put your energy into solving the problems we have in the USA. By being overly involved in the Republic of Korea, allows the South Koreans to RIGHTLY blame the USA for this problem. My Daddy once told me, "if you don't get involved in other folks affairs then you won't be blamed for their problems." Now go do the right thing and be more concerned about the drug, crime, gang, you name it, problems in the USA."

I can definitely see Anti American sentiments rising among the Koreans (Expect the most vicious and thin skinned response by the netizens) if the hostages are executed. When the korean hostage was beheaded in Iraq they foamed at the mouth. I recall reading a post written in Korean from the Al jezeera forum that said something like "we'll provide the fuel, just run the plane to the white house"

I think most of the Koreans expected that first Korean hostage to be released, especially since the apanese activists kidnapped around that time were released. I also recall some AP reporters eventually being released as well.

Skippy,

I think she meant it hasn't been getting covered as much as when the BBC reporter was kidnapped in Gaza for example. I have been watching CNN International and they only had a quick blurb about the hostage situation. I assume the other networks are probably the same way but like I mentioned it has more to do with them not being Americans than being Christian missionaries.
