You are right about the cab drivers at Ujeongbu station, I used to get ripped off by them but not anymore They would insist 15,000 from Ujongbu station to stanley but I have seen the cabs on post in Stanley charge me as little as 5800 won.The off post ones are a totally different story and notorious.Now as soon as I get in I insist on them to turn the meter on failure to do so there is a door handle I just choose to get out.

I always give them a good tip for those that charge me under 6000 with the meter on.(Not trying to make a blank statement for all cabbies most of them just turn on the meter).

This is a tip! what you economize taxi fare

First,MAKE a reservation taxi or van taxi before leaving

Second,Arriving ICN airport,try to find picketter with written your name at exit gate then take his taxi

I learned how to combat the corrupt cab drivers by writing their names down on the information plaque along with their company's telephone number. Since I'm not fluent in Korean I would call my wife and tell her the info. This would usually shut the cab driver up very quickly. The cab drivers at Stanleyville hated me because of the run ins I had with them.

The easy solution was to learn basic korean. Used to get raped by cabs in Uijongbu until I learned the numbers for the cab companies. After a couple of trips from legit cab drivers I was able to get their phone numbers and pay meter prices. Hell I got to know some of them so well that a couple showed up at my wedding with their families. Bottom line is that soldiers should either take the buses or catch the cabs that don't park in the ville.

When read this Hani article, it brought my memory back to my last TDY back in February. I did ran into very aggressive cab drivers who were stalking me and my boss in Inchoen as soon as we got out of arrival terminal. I told them that my relative was picking us up. But they were very consistent and we got hit up several times by other aggressive cab drivers. We end up taking a Military bus to Dragon Hill.
