It is good to see that the military has really been cracking down on this:
A soldier who downloaded photos of young children in sexually explicit situations was sentenced to prison and a dishonorable discharge Friday.
Spc. Dennis M. Chechuck, 22, of Company B, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, was sentenced to 18 months in jail, but under a pre-trial agreement will serve only 14 months. Earlier Friday, he pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.
In all, Chechuck downloaded 88 items, both still and video images, at least one depicting a young child involved in a sexual act with an adult male, according to evidence at the trial. The items were downloaded to his desktop computer in his barracks room at Camp Humphreys. He then transferred those same images to CDs, DVDs and a Palm Pilot. [Franklin Fisher - Stars & Stripes]
The images were of 3-5 year olds. Sick, sick, sick.

That seems like an extremely light sentence, even given teh guilty plea. I had been under the impression that military courts handed out more severe criminal sentences on average than did civilian courts.

The sentencing is actually pretty standard since he didn’t distribute the pornography. If he was distributing the sentencing would have been greater.
However, the thing that is much worse than jail time is the fact he has to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. Imagine explaining your fascination for 3-5 year olds everytime you apply for job anywhere?
It would be enough to make you want to go to Korea and teach English.

I hope some people in prison get a few things through to him while he is there……Normally, I don’t believe in vile retribution, but I do in a case like this…even if he was just helping fuel the disease by giving internet traffic to someone who deserves some real sick retribution….medieval style….I think downloading the stuff is worth some beatings, however….and if he was burning the stuff on CDs and DVDs, I agree with Richardson, he will end up acting out the fantasies at some point in his life….

He definitely one disturbed guy to be checking out pictures of 3-5 year olds and lets hope he doesn’t have any kids of his own to molest one day. Hopefully by having to be a register sex offender this will limit his ability to be around young kids in the future.

In my high school (US) class today, we have been working on Choices and Consequences. It is a freshman (9th grade) course that is supposed to ease their transition into high school.
Today, I ask them if anyone had an example of bad choices and consequences — I told them not to use real names or other information that could identify who the person was….and so on…
One girl said she knew a girl X who was 10 who agreed to have sex with a boy Y who is 19. Luckily, said boy Y is currently in jail. Only half of the students could seem to understand why X having “consented” to the sex did not make it OK….I told them when they reach age 19 or 20, they will understand better (I hope)….

Another example of bad choices…
The high school teacher who decided to have a class discussion with 15 year-olds about the pros and cons of consensual sex with 10 year-old girls. Beats good ol’ fashioned readin’, writin’ and ‘rithmatic, eh?

I hope so, too. Of course, there is still going to be a lemming-like minority who insist on following society’s outdated standards and continue to think consenting to the sex did not make it OK… but, fortunately, the majority will have come around to realizing that those little 10 year-olds are just cute as a button and ripe for the pluckin’.
It’s posts like this which give me hope that all is not lost with America’s education system.
