Grim over at Blackfive has an excellent posting up exposing an obvious media misinformation operation being led by the leftist group Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW). Make sure to read the whole thing about the details behind what IVAW is claiming and Grim’s analysis, but here is how Grim concludes the post:
That’s it. That’s the sum total of everyone they interviewed for this story. They thought they’d make this look like a grassroots complaint among military members, when it’s really an exclusively IVAW operation.
Oh, hey, you know who was arrested with Mr. Lewis at that protest? Why, the IVAW member who confessed to faking anti-Muslim hate crimes.
What you’ve got here is an Information Operation by IVAW, who obviously learned some of their military lessons well. Whether Inter Press is actively conspiring to aid this IO against the United States military, or whether they are simply so unprofessional that their journalists don’t even do basic fact checking, I leave to others to decide.
No one has to make up their mind about Inter Press (IPS) because the fact is that IPS is being used by the left as conduit to cycle their propaganda through in order for more mainstream publications like the Asia Times to pick up and legitimize. Take for example the story that was recently passed around in the leftistsphere about Centcom Commander Admiral William Fallon calling General Petraeus an "ass-kissing little chicken-sh*t". This claim though denied by Fallon passed through all the leftist blogs and media organs as being true. So who started this rumor that was denied by Fallon?
Well none other than an anti-war, leftist ideologue Gareth Porter. Never heard of him before? Well you wouldn’t because his views are so left wing no respectable media outlet will touch him, thus that is why he writes for IPS and blogs for the Huffington Post, and other left wing sites. This is a guy who is a communist apologist and even and apologist for the Khmer Rouge before the evidence of their killings became insurmountable.
This is the same IPS who came up with the IVAW story that Grim just debunked. If you go to the IPS website you can see the very same story that was printed in the Asia Times posted there. So who is this IPS writer Dahr Jamail that is passing off IVAW propaganda through the Asia Times? Nothing more than leftist anti-war activist of course. Don’t believe me than you can check out his webpage and blog and judge for yourself.
Make sure while checking out his blog posting that you don’t miss his passing off of leftist research such as the debunked Lancet Study to claim hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been killed by the US. To get a taste of how objective this IPS reporter is than read this:
"It was a failure of citizenship of the American people that the Bush cabal was allowed to invade Iraq. Thus, every U.S. citizen who is not doing everything in their power to end this illegal and immoral occupation as quickly as possible is complicit with the war crimes being committed in Iraq on a daily basis.”
Like I said do a web search and read his blog and draw your own conclusions but I don’t see how anyone cannot conclude this guy is a committed leftist working with the IVAW to publish stories through IPS that is picked up by more mainstream outlets like the Asia Times. The Dahr Jamail hit piece article is nearly identical to the hit piece article printed in The Nation magazine back in July in order to slime veterans that was debunked by Greyhawk.
It is also important to realize that these hit piece articles are also coming out at the same time as when Beauchamp’s infamous fictions were being published by The New Republic. I think it is pretty easy to conclude that an organized misinformation campaign is being waged by the left in order to create a perception of a "grassroots" movement in the military against the war and to paint soldiers currently serving as bloody thirsty war criminals.
This organized effort began with the Amnesty International plants (see here & here) and then the formation of the Appeal for Redress group which was quickly discredited by a real "grassroots" movement Appeal for Courage. We have seen over the past months the "phony soldiers" along with the lying soldiers and now you have more phony stories being legitimized by mainstream media outlets.
These leftist groups originally tried to create a perception of poor troop morale earlier in the war which failed, so they concentrated their efforts to stop military recruiting by attacking and banning recruiters or going after ROTC programs. Likewise this has also failed though they continue to attack recruiters. The military has been able to meet recruiting requirements for the past two years during a time of war.
Then the media tried to create an image of US soldiers with higher than normal suicide rates, which once again that was quickly debunked. Another parallel effort was to paint soldiers as uneducated low lives that are committing crimes all over Iraq. That hasn’t worked yet either. Then they tried create an image of a "grassroots" campaign within the military against the war in Iraq. The Amnesty International plants are one branch of this effort along with the 1LT Ehren Watada’s refusal to deploy, and the New York Times Op-ed. Now it appears they are focusing their energy on pushing a media campaign to paint soldiers as blood thirsty killers unworthy of the nation’s respect. I just have to wonder what Fenton Communications role in all of this is?
Despite their claims, none of these groups including their media allies waging this misinformation campaign support troops and they never did; they are just damn good at hiding it.

Asia Times has always been a little out there, but they do run Don Kirk often enough to keep going back - at least to the Korea section.

There are a few good writers left there like Kirk as well as occasionally Dr. Lankov but overall they have gone down hill quick. The Asia Times used to be a near daily read for me but two years ago I think they had a change in editors that led to it taking a decidely leftist slant.
This article is about the pinnacle of leftist propaganda for the Asia Times.
