Former 2ID Commander & Katrina Hero Retires

» by GI Korea in: US Military

UPDATE: Michelle Malkin has more on General Honore’s retirement including this clip of his "Stuck on Stupid" comment he made to a reporter in New Orleans:

I actually heard him use that line before in Korea but it was a heck of a lot funnier when he used that line on news reporters.

The 2nd Infantry Division commander that was in charge of the division during the fatal traffic accident killing two Korean school girls in 2002 and then went on to spearhead the Hurricane Katrina relief operation has officially retired from the military:

As Lt. Gen. Russel Honore gets ready to retire from the Army and hand over his command on Friday, he says he wants to spend the rest of his life creating a "culture of preparedness" to prevent another post-disaster disaster.

"There’s an attitude everywhere else that people are smarter than they are in New Orleans and in Mississippi. They’re not," the 60-year-old general said at his office at Fort Gillem, just outside Atlanta. "What happened in New Orleans could have happened anywhere on the Eastern Seaboard."

During his 37-year Army career, Honore commanded troops in South Korea and prepared soldiers to fight in Iraq. After Katrina, the native of Lakeland, La., led the vast relief convoy that rolled into New Orleans during its darkest hour. The 22,000-member force was one of the largest federal deployments in the South since the end of the Civil War. [AP]

General Honore says he may get involved in politics during his retirement which would be extremely interesting.  During his time in 2ID the thing I will most remember about General Honore was how he used walk around the ville in Dongducheon at night with his ROK Army taekwondo experts around him and make on the spot corrections of debauchery going on in the clubs.  He also could cuss and give ass chewings unlike any other general I have ever seen.  He had a couple of knicknames that stuck to him as well, the Ragin Cajun and Uncle Russ.

However, in my opinion due to his nature he wasn’t the best general to lead a Korea based unit, but was the perfect choice for the hurricane relief operation where he really made a name for himself.  Farewell Ragin Cajun.

    Agree …

The Ragin Cajun seemed to be out of his element in 2ID, and he definitely could not cope with USFK and CFC bureaucracy. Rather, he seemed to want 2ID to become Ft. Hood – East.

Oh well, time to enjoy retirement …

Honore had a tough guy persona, but among the JAG’s, he had a compassionate reputation. If there were extenuating circumstances to explain why the soldier f**ked up, Honore would more like than not give the soldier a Chapter 10 or even drop the charges.

“The foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing is a vice so mean and low that every person of sense and character detests and despises it.”
