New USFK Commanding General Announced

» by in: USFK

It looks like United States Forces Korea will be having a change of command this summer:

A career general who has been here before is set to take control of the U.S. Forces Korea this summer.  Lieutenant General Walter L. Sharp, director of the U.S. Chiefs of Joint Staff, will be named chief commander of U.S. troops here, replacing the retiring General Burwell B. Bell III, according to sources in Washington.

Sharp served in Korea for two years. From June 1996 to March 1997, he was the executive officer to the commander in chief of the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea. From March 1997 to October 1998, he served as the assistant division commander of the U.S. Army Second Infantry Division of the Eighth United States Army, according to the Web site of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.

A Congressional hearing in Washington is expected next month, the sources said. If approved, Sharp is expected to arrive in Seoul in July.  According to the sources, the U.S. State Department yesterday designated Sharp as Bell’s successor, with an official announcement expected later this week.  [Joong Ang Ilbo]

I don’t know a whole lot about General but you can view his full biograpy here.

I find it interesting that the DOD selected a General on his way up (3 to 4 stars) as compared to the previous selection of a General on his way out (retirement). I don’t know how many of the family friendly initiatives talked about by current leadership will hold up under new leadership. I think the selection signals a new direction and a major change within USFK.
