Is it just me or does "Ninja Assassin" sound about as B grade movie as it gets?:
Rain, South Korea’s foremost entertainer recently dubbed one of the world’s most beautiful people, has clinched a leading role in a Hollywood flick scheduled to begin shooting later this year, his U.S. promotion agency said Wednesday.
"Ninja Assassin," to be directed by James McTeigue, will mark the first time for the 26-old singer and actor, whose real name is Jeong Ji-hoon, to play a leading role in a U.S. movie. He will make his official Hollywood debut in May with a smaller role in "Speed Racer."
"This is such a huge opportunity for me. It seems like a dream," he said at a press conference in Seoul. [Yonhap]
I don’t know about everyone else, but I can think of many other Koreans I would rather see in a Hollywood movie than Rain.

The “B grade” movie, Ninja Assassin, will actually be directed by Star Wars II assistant director James McTeigue… under the production of a couple of guys known as the Wachowski Brothers… who made a little movie with him a while back called “The Matrix”.
Not exactly a B movie director or production team.
Further, as they previously worked with Rain on Speed Racer, I imagine they cast him, not for his tremendous popularity among American audiences, but for some kind of talent…
…although they somehow managed to squeeze a passable performance from Keanu Reeves… so maybe.
No, in the haste to bash Rain, the REAL point has been overlooked.
He is playing the lead… which could mean he will be an assassin… a ninja assassin…
…a Japanese ninja assassin.
Will Korea even be mentioned in this movie?
I guess it has a better ring than Ajashi Assassin…
…although, with the right intonation, ajashi can sound pretty menacing.

I loved the Matrix, I enjoyed the sequels, I thought V for Vendetta was quite watchable… I expect Speed Racer will be acceptable… and I trust the judgment of the directors and producers to cast Rain correctly.
Like all modern entertainers, he caters to the lowest common denominator (which goes double in the teeny-bopper Korean market)… but that does not mean he is without talent.
Perhaps all the teenage girls throwing themselves at your feet have convinced you that you have more pizazz than Rain… so it is understandable. I’ll wait for both of your film debuts until I decide.

Heck, Leonardo DeCaprio was fantastic in The Departed.

I wonder about his “leading role”. He’ll probably receive his share of screen time, but is he really relevant to the movie? Or is he some gimmick character who utters a couple lines in English with mangled Korean pun then gets kicked out of a skyscrpaer unto his death?
Personally, I’d rather see Korean Americans (or any Koreans active in Hollywood) like Sandra Oh, Will Yun Lee, and Daniel Dae Kim receive significant parts in event films. Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa could kick Rain’s a$$ anyday.

What did he do so wrong to deserve such venom? Well.. he’s a Korean/Asian pop icon. We can’t have that can we? Korea stick with the stereotype that we give you which is you have nothing to offer the world.
