Amnesty International Condemns North Korea Executions

Incredibly I actually thought Amnesty International had found time a way from doing things like their “Wear Orange Day” in solidarity with Gitmo terrorists to get around to condemning the executions of 15 North Korean refugees:

The Associated Press reported Friday that the human rights group Amnesty International urged North Korea to halt summary executions of its people.

The statement came after a report alleged that Pyongyang conducted a public execution last month of 15 people accused of attempting to escape the communist state.

Amnesty’s Seoul bureau said in the statement, “Due to chronic food shortages, many North Koreans have little choice but to risk the dangerous journey to China.”

The group also said the North Korean authorities’ extreme punishment is “yet another injustice for the beleaguered population.” [KBS Global]

Note that only Amnesty’s Seoul bureau condemned the executions because I went to Amnesty International’s webpage and guess what, I found no mention about the condemning of the executions. In fact the front page still has front page links to more Gitmo nonsense along with things such as Palestinians killed in the Gaza violence and countries where journalists were killed. No mention of the executed North Koreans. Anyone surprised?

While you strongly deplore that Amnesty Int'l is not in the business of being loyal bumboys to Ann Coulter, 'Goebbels' Limbaugh, and President Cheney, it seems the group has it's own agenda.

That agenda appears to be to dissuade the economically biggest and culturally/militarily most-important country in the world not to descend into the barbarism of torture, and running, well, medieval dungeons into which random people are snatched and stare at walls for the rest of their lives without a trial or any due process. Because that biggest country's behavior is a meaningful example to the world, and North Korea is a meaningless couple of acres ignored by the world.

Perhaps after the most important country in the world refrains from acting like bloodthirsty South American junta generals, AI will have time to properly headline abuses in tiny little corners of the world.

It's off-topic, but I am interested in hearing ROKDrop's reaction to something I read the other day. Chalmers Johnson.

He called Britain and Australia America's 'Sepoy nations' . I thought it was an especially hilarious description for Britain. Thoughts?
