Once I asked my conversation class, "Who do you think is the greatest athlete in the entire history of sports?" Naively, I was expecting names like Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali, Pele, Maradona, Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan, Roger Federer or Babe Ruth, and a lively discussion of the very nature of greatness. My students' answers were: Park TaeHwan (who's seventeen), and (drumroll please. . . ) Park Jisung, who doesn't even start for his own team. . . "but he works hard." Nothing against either of them, but I was a little surprised to find a (very good but still a) sub and a seventeen-year-old on my list of candidates. I weighed the idea of putting forward a case for Ichiro Suzuki, just to be a prig, and changed the subject instead. Sigh. Move on, nothin' to see here. Sigh.
