The victim of the stabbing death of a Korean man in Sydney has now been identified as the brother of Korean actor Lee Dong-gun:
It was just revealed that a South Korean student was fatally stabbed and another seriously injured in an attack in Sydney’s CBD at 1am on early Friday morning. He was apparently the target of what the Australian police believes to be Asian crime gangs. Superintendent Mark Murdoch said there was no evidence the South Koreans instigated the attack, which local media reported as following an argument in a fast food outlet.

Here is more details about the murder from the Australian police:
Police said two South Korean students were attacked after an argument between them and a group of men near the World Square shopping centre, on the corner of Pitt and Liverpool streets, about 1am (AEDT).
A 20-year-old man today remains in serious condition in hospital with a serious stab wound to his upper body following the incident.
In Parramatta Bail Court today, 18-year-olds Michael Lee and Ivan Wong, both of Carlingford in Sydney’s north-west, appeared via videolink charged with murder, causing wounding or grievous bodily harm to a person with intent to murder, and common assault. [AAP]
Judging by the Chinese names of the perpetrators it is not likely that this murder was racially motivated in anyway. In fact according to the below video the gang that descended on the two Koreans did so because the two Koreans simply stared at them:
Hat tip to Buhay Sa Korea for the video.
For those that don’t know Sydney does have a gang problem that tends to come with cities the size of Sydney and such attacks happening is not uncommon especially alcohol fueled ones. Nevertheless it is still a totally senseless killing but as I said before I seriously doubt it was racially motivated in anyway. Lee Dong-gun and his family are currently rushing to Australia to identify the body and to bring him home for burial. I wish them well as they try to get through this tragedy.

Riddle: If an Eskimo stabbed a Korean as punishment for the infamous Korean stare, would it be racism?
Reply

Joe,
Does an Eskimo identify himself as Asian?
Now, if a Yupik stabbed an Inuit… well…

If the Eskimo’s motive was strickly in response to the stare independent of the victim’s Koreaness. Then I believe it would not be racism. Thus, if a white Australian had killed the Korean, the Australian would be a racist. Yet, if a Chinese man killed a Korean, it would merely be an inter-Asian squabble. According to my sources.

I think it’s a fallacy to separate the stare from the Koreaness. They are both two sides of the same coin. Thus, any retaliation against the Korean stare is a racially motivated crime. The Eskimo is, therefore, a racist. That is, unless the Korean and Eskimo share similar genes. Then it’s fratracide. Thus, a lesser crime with less jail time involved.

Is saying that the “Korean stare” exists in itself racist? I must admit the only time I can remember someone just serenly staring at me was from a young Korean couple here in the states. I was working at my desk job in college and greeted them in Korean when I heard them overspeaking it. I have done the same to people who speak different languages but this was the first time that after a brief conversation I was given an encore of a 2 minute serene looking stare that just would not let up. Eventually I began to speak with someone else who walked up to my counter but when I looked to my right there they were still staring in a peacefull way even after I had waved goodbye several times. It was a very non threatening stare but being not used to being stared at it was kind of freaky. Many people might take the “Korean Stare” as rude if it does exists. But people need to understand that what is considered rude in some places is considered a way of life in other societies. And I’m pretty sure any Asian can attest that non-Asians in America be them white or black have a tendency to stare at Asian people all the time. As if fascinated.

My understanding is that Koreans are fully aware of the un-nerving effects of prolonged stares. They do it to each other as a form of domestic psy-op warfare. The otherness of a different ethnicity is psychologically offensive to a Korean. Thus, the “eating eyes” is a form of controlling the psychological threat felt by the Korean. Most Koreans care less if it makes you feel uncomfortable. They need to stare for their personal comfort — to feel in control.
Giving the benefit of the doubt to Koreans is solely a white man’s virtue. Some Chinese, apparently, don’t put up with the “Korean stare” very well.

I actually discovered this site from previously visiting a blog run by some idiotic chinaman making his douchebag statements about Koreans as usual. I assume this blog has more chinks running their mouth about Koreans then the actual English teachers, GIs or other foreigners.
Frankly, I don’t consider people irrelevant to my family and career success worthy of my time or consideration, and that includes negative remarks. I don’t waste my time irrationally critisizing someone unless I feel truly threatened. Yet I see unneccessary bashing of Korean people here by cancer cells like TheGuy and Doug. A person was murdered and the other critically injured, regalrdless of nationality or situation, yet these scum sucking morons blaim the cause to the good ole lump sum ‘Koreans’.

Sounds like my guess was right, only the low-self esteemed chinese label themsleves as ‘YourMaster’, perhaps some of you are pissed off of seeing your women making the dinner conversations fill with Korean actors and singers so much that led to you to develop inferior complexity? By all means I am not saying that Korean men are more handsomer than other Asian men… but I do know one thing is that every each year, chinese women are entering South Korea to work or do ‘whatever’ by the thousands, and they say they will go back to china eventually… but they keep staying around. My last visit to a bank in Seoul, I thought I was in china… all these bank tellers speaking in mandarin… hey… at least Koreans offer them jobs.

I don’t care what anybody says, North Koreans freely worship their Dear Leader Kim Jong Il. Even in Japan, where they are free to do as they please, North Koreans worship Kim Jong Il. North Koreans in Cambodia, China and Thailand all worship Kim Jong Il. Bizarre???
Even when they are free, Koreans worship bizarre cult like figures. Kim Jong Il, Moonies etc. A race of fanatics. That is the disgrace.

@ Jeff, Joe, miffy, TheBeast, thereYouHaveIt, YourMaster, Doug, and theguy.
What a crock of shit this is, trading off racial slurs while completely disregarding the heart of the matter (the simple fact that a student was killed) and indeed perpetuating the EXACT circumstances and stereotypes that you so strong believe sparked this murder.
Chinese or not – I think the video and reported facts make it clear that these gangs members attacked for fairly unprovoked reasons. Furthermore, no matter what kind of purported disdain LDG’s brother showed towards those two boys, STABBING him and his friend was NOT and will NEVER be justified no matter how salient their reasons are.
*
A “Korean” stare? The phrase itself has racial undertones and is built on a biased belief that Koreans have a “stare” that no other race is capable of or ever gives to other people. By referring to something like a “Korean stare” indicates you are consciously and automatically separating Koreans from the rest of the human race – racism at its finest. Such a term is racist and the belief and the assumption that the “Korean stare” exists because Koreans feel inferior as already deconstructs your argument through your own racism. The last time I checked “staring” was an ability shared by all humans.
Furthermore, it’s intriguing to see people demean not just Koreans but Chinese as well through their comments revealing all too much Occidentalism rather than the ability to open-mindedly analyze the case at hand.
“Giving the benefit of the doubt to Koreans is solely a white man’s virtue. Some Chinese, apparently, don’t put up with the “Korean stare” very well.”
“White people in general tolerate it, but Chinese don’t. Lets not lynch this Chinese youth, until we hear his side.”
These comments reveal total arrogance towards all Asians and the inherently racist belief in white superiority. White men obviously are the forgiving, long-suffering victims of this infamous “stare” and while “lynching” Chinese is condemnable, clearly assuming that Chinese inherently lack this particular “virtue” and are incapable of “tolerating” such acts is understandable because we all know that whites are the only ones who are capable of enduring unjust suffering.
*
Scorning a North Korean’s desire to escape the only Stalinist regime left in world is not only inhumanly heartless but also revealing in how you must treat them since they are not “of your own kind.”
Perhaps you should ask Chinese people why they don’t reject Korean “plastic surgueryed actors.” Whether you like it or not, there are many open-minded Chinese who wholeheartedly embrace talent and cross-cultural exchange. Furthermore, why would Chinese society as a whole care much about the prevalence of plastic surgery, especially since China herself actually holds the highest percentage of plastic surgery (followed by Japan and Taiwan)? Plastic surgery is hardly an issue when it comes cultural appreciation.
*
“It’s funny to hear that the Koreans talking about “inferiority complex”. Isn’t that your specialty?
Your guys are always looking for a master for “protection”, be it Chinese, japanese or American. Poor Koreans never enjoyed true independence throughout their history. The American soldiers are still raping your ugly women in your own land!
”
Perhaps you should consider that Korea has always been under attack by either China or Japan. Korea has always held the dubious acclaim of being the ideal “military base” that larger countries always coveted. To refer to the necessity of going to other countries for military aid and playing larger countries off of each to survive would be akin to condemning Koreans for not simply giving up right away – in which case, there would be no Korea, which seems to be the desire of all the racists here. In any case, “true” independence is an elusive ideal that encapsulates not only complete economic mobility but also the freedom to simply be without the denunciations and judgments of others. In which case, no country and her people have ever been truly free.
*
And now, with the help of “theBreast” we can have a better understanding into the mind of Kyopo. The hatred that Kyopos hold runs deep. Lets face it, Kyopos are just different. Chinese-Americans are AMERICAN.
Kyopos, are KOREAN.”
In itself, the arguments of ThereYouHaveIt and The Beast are fallacious in how they begin with a statement that already demands belief in the conclusion. From what I have witnessed as an American, recent immigrants of China and Korea tend to be rather similar and assimilate no faster into American society than the other. Perhaps you are the keeper of some secret fact that Kyopos are just “different” and that Chinese somehow are inherently function specially as the “fabric” of American society. Your racism shines through your belief that Kyopos are too “full of hatred and racism.”
In which case, you and all these racist commenters must be Kyopos.
“Even when they are free, Koreans worship bizarre cult like figures. Kim Jong Il, Moonies etc. A race of fanatics. That is the disgrace.”
Every culture and country has their share of cults and fanatics. Unless the words Aum Shinrikyo, Pana Wave, Falun Gong, and Scientology don’t ring a bell, your comment remains rather unfounded. Unless of course, Japan, China, and America are not free… Which is just as much of a disgrace wouldn’t you say?

Oh my, a Korean must have made a veritable “feast” of your flesh for you to refer the way Koreans look at you as “domestic psy-op warfare!” But I’m sure you were absolutely delicious and these Koreans enjoyed every succulent piece of your well-toned, god-like figure. I assume you have the “white man’s virtue” of “giving the benefit of the doubt to Koreans” (unless of course you have number of dead Koreans hidden in your closet). And with your profound “virtue” I hope you understand that these Koreans were cannibalistically nibbling away at your beautiful eyes and body because they felt SO threatened by your divine power to bestow such grace as “giving them the benefit of the doubt.”
You clearly care less if your racist comments make Koreans feel uncomfortable. Hide under the cloak of the intellectual if you will but it’s all too clear you need to make stereotypes and overarching generalizations for your personal comfort — to feel in control.

The only thing this topic revealed is the depravity of Chinese, Koreans, and “whites.” Before attacking how one represents their country, you yourself should examine how you are representing yours.

I mean… just read The New York TImes or Washington Post… and see all the derogatory news there is about china… wouldn’t you go mentally insane after awhile?
The major classification of people who slanders South Korea:
The low-lifers, unemployed losers with lots of free time on the net, Chinese, Japanese, Taiwanese, bitter English teachers who can’t teach and has no social skills, losers who never had a girl friend in their own country – tries to hook up with Korean chick but failed and now hates the entire Korean people, loser military GIs who got picked up by a recruiter while hanging around in a local swap meet and now in Korea mixing in with the juicy girls while pissing on some parked car in an dark alley drunk as usual, did I mention the Chinese?
The major classification of people who slanders china:
All of the above (add or subtract a few) plus….
the World Leaders, the mainstream Medias of the free world, middle class citizens of the world, parents who are worried of their kids being exposed to chemically harmful toys, citizens who are terrified of consuming poisoned dumplings and other food, terrified people of the world weary of accidently encountering harmful chinese manufactured medicines not adequate for consumption, genuine sports fans frustrated with chinese sholin soccer, athlets who wants to bring their own food to china, athleste who wants to post in Japan rather than china due to polluted air, the list goes on and on and on and on… and I haven’t even covered Tibet.
One thing for sure: It is entirely too easy to counter a chinese slander of South Korea… just dig into a few days of article news on any media you can find… it will have something derogatory on it… any day of the year!

“STABBING him and his friend was NOT and will NEVER be justified no matter how salient their reasons are.”
So, you don’t believe in self defence for any reason. I think you are holding that rather strict rule only to these boys, and I doubt you would apply that to yourself.
“Perhaps you should consider that Korea has always been under attack by either China or Japan. ”
Just the opposite is true. The “hermit kingdom” has had relitivy few wars with Japan and China consitering their proximity. Think of all the wars between England and France and the one war (hideyoshi invasion by Japan) started by Japan. Name all the other wars? There was no colinization war.
Name all the chinese wars? They were invited by the north during the Korean war.

Austrailian police have in their possession, the entire scene of the murder from numerous surveilance cameras installed within that location.
“So, you don’t believe in self defence for any reason. I think you are holding that rather strict rule only to these boys, and I doubt you would apply that to yourself.”
Austrailian police and their criminal investigation team has stated the murder was entirely unprovoked. As of now, that is the best basis we can go by, the report from the police which I don’t think that they have any favoriTIsm toward Koreans over the chinese, tells us a good idea of what happened during the murder. BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, the chinese have COOPERATED with the police in aiding the description of that event, in which some are concern that the cooperation will lead to reduction of their punishment in the long term.
DO YOU EVER READ INTO THE DETAILS OF THE NEWS BEFORE YOU VOMIT YOUR CRAP ALL OVER THIS THREAD?

FACTS:
Korean Student killed by two chinese gang members as the result of an unprovoked attack. Period.
That’s all we need to know. There is no need to feel try to understand the gangsters’ side of the story. There is nothing that justifies murder just because someone looks at you funny. period.
to the people that are trying to take the side of the two chinese murderers. has anyone stared at your funny? what has your reaction been? at the most its usually something like “stop staring at me, you prick”… have any of you under any circumstances pulled out a knife and stabbed the starer? have any of you even considered doing something like that? i don’t think so. normal people don’t react that way. i will grant that people can “feel” like they want to do it. but feeling like it and doing it are two different things. that’s what separates us from animals. we have rationale and control over primal feelings. these two chinese murderers crossed that line. there is nothing that can justify what they did.
Too bad this didn’t happen in the states, where there is a death penalty. I would have picketted the jail house to get them the death penalty.
