Last week General Bell testified to Congress that the Korean government asked him to delay the reduction of USFK personnel stationed on the peninsula and now the Korean government has responded to this claim:
A spokesman for South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense said Friday that a news report saying South Korean officials believe the top U.S. general here is using a possible pause in the drawdown of U.S. troops as a “bargaining tactic” was untrue and improperly reported.
U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. B.B. Bell told a congressional committee March 12 that he expects South Korean president Lee Myung-bak to ask for a pause in the reduction of U.S. troops next month while the countries study the future of the drawdown. [Stars & Stripes]
Read the whole thing but the Korean government does not deny they will ask for the USFK reduction delay. All of this is just a continuation of the fight between USFK and the Korean government to equally share the cost of the USFK relocation which as we have seen with anything involving USFK funding, the Korean government doesn’t want to equally fund anything in regards to USFK.
