The Navy’s New PT Uniform

» by in: USFK

New Navy Uniform

Some of you in Korea may start seeing these new Navy PT uniforms pretty soon:

The Navy introduced its new physical training uniform (PTU) to the world, in a photo shoot, March 20-21.

The PTU consist of a gold shirt with reflective Navy lettering and blue shorts with Navy lettering and reflective markings.

The new uniforms will be required for all group and unit physical training (PT) in the Navy, as well as the semi-annual physical fitness tests.

“It’s to support the culture of fitness and provide a uniformality among Sailors,” said Robert Carroll, the head of the naval uniform office at Chief of Naval Personnel. “To achieve this, the Navy’s leadership decided to adopt the new PT uniform.”

The new PTUs will begin hitting the Navy, with Recruit Training Command, in April, and will phase into the rest of the fleet between May and September. Sailors will be able to pick up their uniforms at Navy Exchanges around the world, costing $50 for the required two sets of PTUs.  [USFK.mil]

What I like about the uniform is that the top t-shirt is bright which should in theory eliminate any need for the ridiculous reflective belt and road guard vests we wear in the US Army.

You watch! The squids will be forced to wear orange road guard vests by the post commander up in Yongsan after some automaton Sergeant Major nearly blows a gasket.

If the person driving the car cannot see that shirt then they must be blind. I have always found it interesting how the US military spends all this money to design a new PT uniform with reflective lettering on it and then covers it with a road guard vest. What was the point of the new uniform in the first place?

It appears the Navy have put more thought into it and made it Sergeant Major proof.

    Wow.

The Navy figured out how to transform Fat Bastard into Goldmember.

    But…

Everybody knows silver, white, blue and gold clash on several levels.

    How gauche.

And they say the Navy is full of homosexuals. Doubtful, now.

What I want to know is why it costs FIFTY dollars for two sets? That's 25 bucks for a t-shirt and a pair of shorts… a t-shirt and a pair of shorts, folks…

…both of which are available for well under a buck from any Chinese sweatshop in quantities of a thousand or more… with free shipping of a container-full to any port in the world.

I thought t-shirts could only be expensive if they had a sports logo or designer name… and, well, honestly, "Navy" is not quite up there yet…

…but I like the sparkles… same technology used in the rainbows from My Little Pony shirts in the 80s.

maybe … you complain that it is 50.00 for 2 sets … …so can you buy you fav. shirt up town for 12.50 and a pair of shirts for 12.50 up town too? doubt it … the only thing i am pissed off about is THE SEABEE COMMANDS CAN NOT HAVE PT GEAR WITH A SEABEE PRINT ON IT !!! ACB-1 had bright yellow pt shirts and sweat shirts back in 2003 and they complained that we were in kuwait getting shot at with scuds and we were wearing bright yellow tee shirts! so they changed it to our famous brown ones! common sense…and if i could buy the yellow shirst and correct shorts stationed on a (sucky) air force base i would have them tommarow!—suck it people or get out and make advancement easier for othere people!!!!

The AF might not tuck in its PT shirt but the main purpose of the PT uniform isn't looks, it's to work out in. Perhaps those other military automatons should consider that before making such dumb comments. Also, it's not required to tuck in the shirt by regulation but that doesn't mean your commander can't force it!

The AF's PT uniform is also reflective to the point where it's almost "lighthouse-esque". Problem we had in Korea though, the USFK commander was Army and they decided we had to wear a reflective belt with it (even though it was totally pointless to do so). Wasn't until partway through my tour at Kunsan that our base commander showed some cojones and said we didn't have to wear the damn belt.

It sucks. Why is Navy leadership trying to make us more like the Marines (no insult intended)? I don't want to wear a khaki shirt and dark pants like the Marines, and I don't want to have standard PT uniform the same way the Marines do. And, if you are going to copy other services… at least use the good ideas and improve on the bad. How about letting us buy whatever brand/quality tee-shirt we want as long as it is the correect color yellow? This seems to work for the Marines and their brown shirts. That way the real PT freaks can buy high-end, sweat wicking, aerodynamic shirts and shorts if they want, and those who don't want to spend a fortune on PT gear can get what they want.

OK, in fairness I did give the new Navy PT uniform a couple of months try-out and it failed on several points.

    1) The liner in the shorts is very poorly designed. Unless the liner is removed, the shorts leave most men with a plumbers crack problem when the person bends over. This is caused by the liner pulling the shorts down and the elastic waistband failing to recover the "above-crack' location.

    2) The material, as has been commented on many times prior, is poor. No, it's piss-poor. For a $20+ outfit I would expect something better than this. It reminds me of an Asian knock-off kit I often see in the town center market for 3 euro, just lower quality.

    3) Don't put it into the ships laundry (or your home dryer). That is unless you want to have reflective on everything but the PT uniform.

    4) Wear an undershirt (women take note of this one) unless you don't mind wearing something that has the opacity of an 80's mesh top when damp.

The second half to the story is the wearing instructions written by some foggy-bottom apparatchiks. Who in his/her right mind writes an instruction that requires a tucked in t-shirt during PT? This is a fitness workout, not a bloody dress-in-review. Why should any Sailor be mandated to “watch the shirt tucks” between PT-sets? My word, I never knew looking spiffy contributed to a great workout. If Washington is really this concerned about appearances, I fear for the future of our military and our country because the leadership has lost touch.

    Truly sad.
