West Sea Naval Battle Veterans Receive Official Recognition

It took six years but finely the South Korean government is going to honor the sailors murdered in the 2002 naval ambush by North Korea:

The government will rename the naval clash with North Korea in the West Sea in 2002.

The official name of the clash will be changed to the “Second Yeonpyeong Sea Battle” from the “Exchange of Fire in the West Sea.”

The Defense Ministry said the new name better reflects that the Navy fought to the death to defend the Northern Limit Line (NLL), the nation’s de facto border in the West Sea.

It added that the government will also honor the six South Korean sailors killed in the battle with a national memorial service.     [KBS Global]

ROK Drop readers may remember that the ambush by North Korea was conducted to deflect attention that South Korea was receiving with the nation’s amazing success in the 2002 World Cup held in Korea and Japan that year.  The ruling liberal governments over the past six years have done everything possible to minimize what happen that day because of their failed Sunshine Policy views.

What was most ironic about that year was that North Korea murders six sailors and no one cares, a USFK armored vehicle is involved in an accident that kills two Korean teenagers and it leads to protests involving  hundreds of thousands and quite possibly the worst anti-US hate ever seen in South Korea.

    First a note:

Any of you guys who are techie people — can you look over at my http://www.usinkorea.org site main page –

When I went over to get some quotes and links on this issue to post in the comment, I got a virus warning off the main page multiple times. I had to isolate the file from the cache and thus the page wouldn't reload.

I wonder/guess some hacker was able to get into the page and add something potentially harmful.

I can't track it down myself.

    Back to the orignial comment:

Below is a quote from the Kim Dae-Jung presidency immediately after the North "apologized" for the event:

" ”We regret the accidental armed clash that took place in the West Sea recently,” North Korea's chief negotiator Kim Ryong-sung said in a message to South Korean Unification Minister Jeong Se-hyun delivered through the truce village of Panmunjeom. “The two Koreas should make joint efforts to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents.”

Seoul welcomed the North's move. “The message should be regarded as the North's clear apology for the naval clash,” Vice Unification Minister Kim Hyung-ki said."
