I guess he didn’t want to stick around for the Olympic torch relay in North Korea:
A North Korean soldier has defected to South Korea through the inter-Korean border, marking the first defection by a military officer via the heavily-fortified border in 10 years, an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said Monday.
The North Korean, identified only by his surname Ri, crossed the border shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday and told South Korean guards that he was seeking asylum, the official said, asking not to be identified. [Yonhap]

This is the first news i have seen of a KPA crossing the DMZ. I read about it in news archives, but to see it in breaking news is interesting. I hope more information is available.

Considering the treatment of North Korean defectors during the last ten years, this could be the beginning of a trend, now that the appeasement governments are history. Its worth watching to see if more make the trip.
