And so, the true reason for the demonstrations has come to fruition. News flash, it was never about the beef (an old Wendy's commercial comes to mind) but instead it is all about the minority political party trying to vie for power again. The funny thing is, all the news can seem to focus on is the “Mad Cow Scare” when the real underlying story is the riots which are being PAID for by a political party. For those who don’t know, there are really four groups participating in these demonstrations. The first are those who are innocent civilians being paid to hold a candle. A Korean friend of mine was nearby the demonstrations on 28 June (Saturday), downtown at the city hall area. He was with his wife and two teenage children. He was offered 120,000 won (~$120 USD) per family member to hold a candle and stand in the demonstration when it was still peaceful. He took the money and stood there for a time and then left. The second is the more dangerous, professional ‘rioters’ who are paid to show up, incite violence in the protest, start throwing things/conduce violence, then they leave as the mob is ready to attack the police. The third are student groups who are pro-North Korea/Anti-ROK Government. They typically are hot heads who will follow the professionals when the time comes. The fourth are those who are in groups participating in the rally. These are usually the ones who are arrested as the professionals/students are usually LONG gone when the police have had enough and start making arrests. The political groups have gone one step further and started a ‘blog’ war against the leading party here. Several people have already been arrested for attempting to incite violence through the internet. They made a false claim that a young student was attacked, dragged off into a riot police bus, then gang raped. This was a completely false accusation which was purely meant to get people angry at the government. I think the ROK Government has shown considerable restraint up to this point in dealing with the riots.

US Beef goes on sale this week sometime in the stores…I have a feeling it will take a day or two then sales will pickup and people will be waiting in line for it. Most stores here are already talking of selling it for 30-40% off in order to get people to buy it. Koreans will ‘eat’ it up in my opinion. They are starving for cheaper beef.

In response to Chae Sone, why would the MADCOW assembly men want to take part in the government? They care nothing for their country and only seek power. They are gaining more power by not participating in the government. Status quo for politicians. They should be ashamed of themselves.

ADCOW DEMONSTRATORS’ MISTAKEN

1.	The opposition leaders unfairly treated the new government without giving enough time for the honey moon. With the issues of mad cow they falsely pushed the government into these social disorders, with propaganda. The government should investigate if Communists involved in the anti government actions.

2.	Mad cow disease demon impressed to other nations as if it is an ant American movement.

3.	Pro-mad cow national assembly members revealed their poor judgment. All assembly members have duty to represent their constituents and to propose their political agenda according to the will of them. The assembly members, without going to the national assembly, participating the disorderly demonstration are like promoting the mob rule. Such national assembly members do not understand their duties and responsibilities and displayed their stupidity.

4. Korean is facing a new economic crisis, that is, rising price of crud oil. The oil price is shaking up the economic stability of the world. Koreans government should prepare how to face this crisis. The citizens should give enough time to the government so that it could have ideal social planning.

5. If the opposition national assembly members continue to promote the demonstration, the citizens have the right to recall them because of their poor judgment or irresponsible political action.

5. Remember President’s anti nuclear policy is winning. Now Kim Jong il appears to be coming Gorvachev Kim. The Mad cow demonstration in South seems to display the segment of the lightheaded Korean population.

6. The Catholic priests’ demonstration to blame the government is a late reaction to the crisis in wrong way. They should have asked the demonstrators
Proper judgment without going into destructive direction.

7. If the mob action continues, the government should declare a marshal law and restore the social order. Otherwise, they plunge the society into an anarchy which will be fatal to the economy. Send the stupid pro-communists to the workers’ paradise which going to disappear soon with American economic aid.

8. In America, millions eat beef everyday and work happily. Why do you worry so much?

all across Korea there are protests. This is not the act of a few.... this is bigger.

hxxp://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/05/117_23917.html

People need to wake up. Remember how Korea promised to open her rice market. Well, has anybody seen foreign rice?

Koreans will say anyting to get the US-KOR-FTA, so they can dump more auto in the USA. Once the FTA is passed, korea will revert back to her protectionist ways.

I don't think we should under estimate the Cows Gone Wild Saga either. We have to wait to see how it plays out...but...

...you do not get 2002s or 2000s without 1998 IM-Fs and 2008 CGWs.

I am convinced of the following: Before Pres. Roh and Donald Rumsfeld scared Korea straight, the habit for a long time was to have a spike in anti-US activity occur about once every 8 to 14 months. You generally had one a year -- varying in size.

The ones people remember are the really big ones that included large protests with violence.

But, ones like the Cows Gone Wild Saga are key to the larger, more active, more violent periods:

By having something (often irrational) pop up about once a year, the anti-US habit becomes self-perpetuating.

What I mean is --- especially the high school and middle schoolers who were targeted by the anti-US groups, but the society as a whole --- will remember the CGW Saga for years to come, even if it stops right now today.

We just saw in the news today where Park whatsherface (Park Chung Hee's daughter) came out putting pressure on President Lee and his hand-picked GNP leadership to renegociate the beef accord. That carries weight.

And the news blitz has already been enough, and of a certain tone, even with some (thankful) counter-notes against the anti-US trend, that the beef issue will remain in current memory for some years to come.

And of course, there are a long string of "anniversaries" strung out each year to also help Koreans remember who the real trouble making nation for South Korea is.

This is how even cadets in the military academies end up listing the US as the primary enemy of the nation.

I've always said --- you have to do more than count heads at protests or the level of violence in the street.

The bulk of the work making that violence happen periodically is done in the classroom and newspaper, and these days over the internet as well.

I think so far the US beef nonsense is not really expanding much compared to past anti-US nonsense and will eventually blow over.

Shattered those videos were really funny.

Shattered,

Those were great videos. I really laughed. I thought the dynamite picture was really good. It is great to see that Koreans are also very good at over dramatization and not just Americans. That Cow video is from an American commercial if I remember correctly and the music sounds like something from work-out scenes on Rocky. Anyone else remember them?

Oh, and 5% of China is a lot of people too (150 million), but there would still be a paultry 2.85 billion people left not in the minority...but if they don't say anything then it doesn't matter. I would have to agree with usinkorea that some of those who don't voice their opinion are silently supporting/rooting for the cause as well but awaiting for it to gain more support and become a bigger 'spike.'

usinkorea,

I would tend to agree with your nationalist type views by Koreans. There seems to be a very small spike right now but really not that bad. I haven't seen that much going on in Seoul other than that one Anti-US beef demonstration and the typical Friday outside the USFK/Yongsan protest which has been on-going for over 10-20 years. The news here has been motivated by the opposition party...they probably have a big influence on their stories. Nothing concrete but it seems to be a start of a spike. The current administration lost a lot of faith as soon as they also shunned the North as well. It is all starting to pile on at the moment.

Koreans have always been very nationalistic. When IMF hit here back in 1998, there were people bringing in their jewelry, gold, diamonds, and what not just to help pay the debt off! This wouldn't happen in America these days I think. Too many Americans sit back and think, "Where is my free lunch from the government?" I think it is a huge change in the people of our country. This wasn't the case about 40-60 years ago.

Also, I will take a close look at the articles I get translated and see if they are also in the English edition. If they are not I will email them to you. I read the paper and do them all the time.

Tell that Korean girl that the Dawsonville Outlet malls are a waste of her time...seems she doesn't want to waste any at all and is lazy. That's NOT the typical Korean.

I would tend to agree with your nationalist type views by Koreans. There seems to be a very small spike right now but really not that bad. I haven’t seen that much going on in Seoul other than that one Anti-US beef demonstration and the typical Friday outside the USFK/Yongsan protest which has been on-going for over 10-20 years. The news here has been motivated by the opposition party…they probably have a big influence on their stories.

This wouldn’t happen in America these days I think. Too many Americans sit back and think, “Where is my free lunch from the government?” I think it is a huge change in the people of our country. This wasn’t the case about 40-60 years ago.

Also, I will take a close look at the articles I get translated and see if they are also in the English edition. If they are not I will email them to you. I read the paper and do them all the time.
