In the US, with a volunteer-based armed force, Americans show pride and tend to respect those who serve (aside for a few lefties). In Korea, where the conscript system is prevalent, military service is considered a duty and not respected as a career profession. Most young men would rather be in the PC-bangs than serve their country. However, anything comparable to pride in service I saw in Korea came from the ROK Marines. At least in the ROKMC you have to volunteer to get in. They don't take unwilling draftees. Those ROK marines are some hard corp guys.
