Officer’s Wife Found Dead in Taegu

» by GI Korea in: USFK

Thanks to everyone who has emailed me about this story which appeared in the Stars & Stripes this week:

A U.S. military spokesman said Sunday that investigators could file charges by the end of the week in the case of an officer’s wife who was found dead in a mountain valley Friday afternoon, though no suspects have been named.

Maj. Jerome Pionk, 19th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) spokesman, said he couldn’t release the cause of Lea Gray’s death because of the ongoing investigation.

The 27-year-old was the wife of Capt. Christopher Gray, a member of the 25th Transportation Battalion in Daegu.

South Korean police and U.S. Criminal Investigation Division agents found Gray’s body around 4 p.m. Friday afternoon in a mountain valley near Camp Carroll. The Filipina woman was reported missing from her on-post apartment on April 20.  [Stars & Stripes]

As always we should let the investigation play out to determine whether it was a murder or a suicide.  If it was a murder it will not be handled by the local police because the wife is a SOFA status holder which gives jurisdiction to USFK authorities to investigate the crime.

You know that it’s a bad thing when the following things occur:
    1. You report your wife as missing.
    2. A few weeks later the cops come and impound your cars and seal your apartment like it’s a crime scene.
    3. They keep you for questioning and then cut you lose, but they keep your cars and don’t unseal your apartment.
    4. They find your wife’s body in the woods.
    5. They pick you up again and put you in the Camp Humphreys prison, pending further action.

    Apple Pie…

    …it depends on the wife.

So… anyone notice that Korea is a big country… yet they knew where to look for the body? If it had been shortly after her disappearance, it would seem reasonable that they searched the area she was last seen in.

As it was almost a month later, it seems like there might have been a confession involved.

About a week before the body was found USFK pushed out a BOLO (Be On the LookOut) poster via e-mail. At that time it seemed like they had a missing person situation. Interesting to find out what (if anything) changed after that poster.

    Apple Pie,

No spouse deserves death. Walk away from the marriage. Her life has ended, his may as well have ended, and a child is left without her mother.

Your life can always be rebuilt after a divorce. NO SPOUSE DESERVES DEATH.

Hey…i’m a close relative of the wife. She was a good person with a kind heart. Her daughter baby Bianca is close to our family and would do everything to get her back to us ASAP. Cant imagine the trauma she is suffering right now. If any of you know the status of the investigation, please message me back. Being far from Korea, we are left blind. Thanks.

What a beautiful world you must live in. As for me, I know that the female is just as dangerous as the male. (years of EO training)
When a female strikes, she is to be struck in return. Just like any attacker will be.
Guess you haven’t been there yet. You still think women are somehow not your equal.
But murder is a very expensive thing. Only a fool would murder—anyone—of any sex.

You are so right she did not deserve to die. This women was possible caught having an affair with another man, I know of many filipina women who are having affairs behind there spouses back. A large majority of these women are from the Songton area; some even work on Osan Airbase at the different business’s that hire filipinas. And even the filipinas who have married and immigrated to the states fall in this same catagory. They go to the states and start messing around then end up in a domestic violence case then get divorced and move in with there boyfriend. But the X ends up getting revenge in some way or another without careing what the outcome will be.
So my advise to those (husband or wife) who are having affairs should be careful in the land of not quit right. I could be wrong about her. If I am I apologise.

Dan, I worked investigations my entire army career. I have seen more domestic assaults than I care to remember. If you think men and Women are equal physically then you must be a worm of a man. If you are a real man you don’t hit Women, they are not capable of defending themselves against men physically. Doesn’t mean I think I am superior it is just reality.

In response to Bernard thanks for commenting and I really hope your son did not kill his wife. That is why I have been saying everyone should just let the investigation play out and see what comes out of it.

No new information is going to be released until the investigation is over in order to not comprimise it. If charges are brought on anyone that is probably when more info will be released. Until then everything else is just speculation.

I’ve seen a few assaults myself in my 50+ years. So you think females are physically weak and unable to care for themselves. They need a big strong MAN to do that for them, right? You be the one? Females are also smarter than Males. You prove that.
I didn’t say females are “physically” equal. If your going to quote me, get it right Hero. But remember, females are smarter than you. They do well at getting other men (like you) to do their fighting for them.
No, few women can stand and go blow for blow , one on one with a man. But they don’t have to nc47, they can use your muscle.
But back to my original thought; when a female attackes, your a damn fool if you don’t defend. Your way of thinging is her first advantage.
I remember a “sweet little thang” in Anjung ri, back in the day, who decided it a good idea to slap me when I was pulling her off another girl in a,three on one girl fight. I slaped her back. She looked all surprized and said this, “you american man, not supposed to hit woman. Did ya get it, “american man” not “man”.

Oh, I don’t know if your still in uniform or not. But if you are, What-are-you-going-to-do-when-one-points-a-weapon-at-ya. Sorry, I forgot. In your world that doesn’t happen. In your world females are always the victim, males are evil, big and strong, except for — you. Almost forgot, those males who ARE smart enough to know that a female CAN be a threat, CAN do damage, CAN take life, CAN stand up for herself—are worms and less than manly according to you. O well, welcome to the sixth grade.

Dan, Buddy, it’s all right, we just have a difference of opinion… no need to write a book about it. If you feel threatened by women then defend yourself man. In a domestic environment a woman never hurts a man unless she uses some type of weapon and in most cases a woman only use a weapon because she has been struck by a man. So I guess my point is… “man up” and don’t hit a woman to begin with, just walk away…there are many fish in the sea and it is not worth the trouble if you find yourself getting deap enough into an arguement that you would strike a woman in the first place.

So you tell me; What do you do when a female attacks the female your with? “man up” and walk away? That’s your answer.
You’ve seen so much husband on wife action that your blind to the full story. What are the stats on wife murders by husband? Something like 90%? How about husbands killed by the wife? Never happens? I really don’t know. Doesn’t get the same kind of press.

Mental torture is a terrible thing. Something most can not comprehend. If someone I love and trust with all of my heart and soul, someone that becomes part of me and I would gladly give my life for theirs simply betrays me without remorse, betrays me without any concern - now thats what I call torture. Not standing on some box naked with my arms outstretched. What separates us from the animals is our ability to control our actions. Sometimes the dark-side overcomes what Lincoln called bitter angels of our nature.

Bernard, it is you who is assuming. But you are certainly 100% correct to say “many a man has suffered mental anguish at the hands of a woman.” I’m sure the woman is far more capable of inflicting emotional harm than a man is at inflicting physical harm. Physical harm is physically visible and rejected by our society. Mental harm is hidden by the victim and there are no obvious signs.

I guess CID ain’t CSI… or it’s another case of Drag It Out Until It Is Forgotten.

One wonders if this will turn out like the Spc. Vang Her death (aka Naked GI Hit By Taxi)…

…except that Stars & Stripes actually wrote a reasonable and attention-keeping follow-up… instead of assisting in the cover-up (good job, guys!).

I feel bad for CPT Gray, this was a man who made a mistake for providing for someone who had a child and was from the Philippines, by any account a third world country to say the least.

As COL Kurtz said in Apocalypse Now “we train young men to drop fire on people, but their commanders won’t allow them to write f*** on their airplanes because it’s absurd.”

If he did kill her, he probably had a pretty darn good reason.

For the record, she cheated on her husband with several men. She flaunted this in front of her husband. Why she did this, I have no idea, I only know she had several men she was having sex with and her husband could do nothing about it. It is my guess that this fine woman from an upper-class family would be able to take her child from another relationship and return to the PI if there were a physically or mentally abusive relationship. What could CPT Gray do? He couldn’t leave the marriage without this woman gaining alimony or even child support. He couldn’t leave a mentally abusive relationship? If anyone mentally abuses someone else and they are compelled to remain for what ever reason, in my book, thats torture. Thats what I would tell the jury if I were the attorney. It is difficult to train someone to kill another using bare hands, send them to war to do just that and then have them reintegrate into society as if nothing out of the normal has occurred. What does society expect? It is a human struggle to control emotions and actions and this separates us from the lower animals.

NaVi, thats just the world I live in, notice I didn’t say we. Everyone has their own ideas and thoughts. I have expressed mine to excite thought. I have seen many lives ruined because of infidelity and can’t understand why it is not punishable by law. How many fights are started in elementary, middle, and high school over a girl? When the fight happens there, the girl giggles and adores it, but when it hits the real world, the laughter quickly vanishes when a knife or a gun is used, or a woman runs over another with a car, or a woman drowns her children because her boyfriend doesn’t want a girl with children. Everyone says it is easy, just walk away, there are plenty of fish in the sea… Well, people are still killed, lives are still ruined and for what? plain and simple selfishness when a spouse cheats. Why can’t the spouse walk away prior to engaging in another relationship? My point is, cheating on your spouse is dangerous, everyone knows it, everyone knows it leads to a broken heart, or a jealous rage. I am tired of watching women cheat on their husbands and society justifies their actions in one poor way or another. A spouse who cheats is in the same boat as a liar and I think liars and cheats are the scum of the earth and I wish all of them to die in the most horrific of ways.

Filipino’s are no different than any other race. There do seem to be more prostitutes in the PI than any other country and prostitutes, by natural law, violate societies morals, values and principles each time they engage in fellatio, sodomy, Cunnilingus and every other sexual engagement for money. I know this describes more than just prostitutes, for example a woman who marries a man because of financial incentive.

Cheating, is not a game, people die every day because it is pure mental torture to the victim. I have absolutely no sympathy for what ever poetic justice handed to a cheating spouse.

Apple pie, you sound like a poet and a victim. If that is your world then don’t put a tag which says “for the record” because I for one can testify the good nature of my cousin and how she was raised by her family. What do you even know about her? As I have said, you are commenting on real lives of people here and not a fantasy novel you read in a bookstore. Again, learn where to place yourself.

From what I read, I sympathize with whatever life has dealt you. But its good that you are still alive to post comments here and plea your case. How about Leah? Will she be able to express her grief? Will she be able to explain to the world the reasons for her death (as per your allegations)? Will she be able to talk to her daughter why she can no longer be with her when she grows up?

A murder has been committed and in any world (not just yours), may it be a first or a 3rd world country, it is a CRIME. We cry for JUSTICE!

  • Apple Pie
    11:57 pm on May 28th, 2008 39

Oh Navi, you are quite naive. Apparently, you did not know your cousin like so many men. You can have justice, but your cousin is still dead. For me, no amount of justice would ever come close to the death of my loved one. But keep in mind, you might not want to dig too deep into someones personal affairs, and this might be one of those cases. There are some facts of life that are difficult to understand. No one wants to learn their mother, father, sister, or brother are a murderer, rapist, thief etc. But the prisons are filled with them. Keep your head up, but sometimes you have to know when to hunker down and ride out the storm.

    Well…

It’s yet another Friday and time for my weekly update about the lack of an update… with hopes that USFK can’t pull the same Drag It Out Until It Goes Away trick that they did with Vang Her (naked GI hit by taxi).

Let’s review what we know about Lea Gray’s death…

…investigators believed she was dead instead of just missing… they knew where to look for the body… they believe it was a homicide.

They have some kind of inside info.

Combined with the treatment of her husband, this certainly indicates he is the prime suspect… but the investigation sure seems to be dragging out.

Coupled with rather non-specific allegations of cheating wives and murderous husbands here… it certainly brings up more questions… and a lot of suspicions.

    Apple Pie,

Your posts are rather tantalizing in the typical USFK information vacuum… and, statistically speaking, even if you made it all up, you have a good chance of characterizing the situation correctly.

Do you suppose you be able to leave a more specific post that might show a deeper knowledge or closer relationship to this situation?

    See y’all next Friday.

    The plot thickens…

Q: What’s the difference between a suitcase full of clothes and a suitcase full of Filipina?

A: Presumably, Capt. Christopher Gray wasn’t carrying a suitcase full of clothes with the intention to “stay in the barracks” when he left his apartment after Lea Gray’s time of death… if the surveillance camera footage from his apartment is to be believed.

And, yes, there is a confirmed history of frequent fighting.

Bonus Question: Why is it taking so long for charges to be filed?

  • NaVi

Exactly Chickenhead. Thanks for doing your research. We were already informed of this overwhelming evidence way before this column was even posted. • OP.Command

    NaVi,

In typical USFK fashion, there are no updates. I just got word on the street.

As for the delay, who knows… it could be so that the upcoming change of command isn’t marred by scandal… or CID might have botched the investigation so badly that only circumstantial evidence remains.

    Who knows…

The only thing for sure is that Lea’s best interest is not at stake here… nor is Cpt. Gray’s. USFK would rather drop the investigation and let the whole thing be forgotten than expose itself to any scandal… as we saw with the Vang Her (naked GI hit by taxi) incident.

The best thing is for Lea’s family to keep on USFK for information and make a big, loud stink to the Stateside media if they feel things are not being conducted properly.

  • NaVi
    3:38 pm on June 3rd, 2008 50

Thanks ChickenHead, I get what you mean. I guess this kind of scenario is not new to the USFK nor to US and Philippine relationship. We are just glad to have baby Bianca back to our family. She was safely turned over to the family last Friday.

As for the investigation, we have the exact recount of the incident since the Korean chief of police called Leah’s family personally to report the incident. And when you match it with the family’s in-depth knowledge of their daughter’s marriage with Chris…well, you can paint a good picture on how it went down.

May the result be covered up for reasons you mentioned, in God’s eyes the truth will prevail. Do more “digging”, there is more to it than just a “suitcase of clothes” “uncovered”.

I don’t appreciate anyone putting Lea’s name and creating a monster out of her. She was human and she had her own mistakes, like us. What she did exactly, none of us know. What happened behind closed doors between a husband and wife, we do not know. Only she does. We can’t judge her because we ourselves stand to be judged. I only pray for justice in her part. I’m glad her daughter is back with the family.

She was a very close friend of mine. I’ve known her since elementary. No one, friend or not, deserves her demise. She was a loving person and truly cared for those that she cared for.

Many a times she discussed her decisions about her marriage with me, but I never told her what to do. As I said, that’s between a husband and wife. Though I’ve always asked her to make wise decisions, to be safe, and to make sure that when she feels anything amiss to inform me or anyone that can help her right away.

NaVi, my condolences to your family.

Apple Pie, I would read what I say before I send it because I’m sure as the sky is blue you have your own skeletons in the closet and hopefully no one will magnify that to be used against you. We somehow assume the least possible but let’s not forget some people can do the worst, you never know.

I pray it is not the husband for Bianca’s sake as she did spend time with him and that may get into the child’s psyche.

    Justice must and will prevail.

    8:07 am on June 4th, 2008 52

C, unlike you, I don’t have any skeletons in my closet, none, but I’m sure the reason you are saying something like this is because you live your life differently than I live mine. I do not have an ethnocentric attitude either, I simply follow natural law and the rules of the society in which I live. Lea did not. Her mental torture of her husband was, in my opinion, far worse than what he did to her. For some reason, she thought she was playing a game without consequences and she was wrong. This is just a sad story with no winner. The bottom line is, if Lea would not have cheated on her husband, she would be alive today.

AUSSIE ROBBED, KILLED BY NEIGHBORS - Those were the words used as a lead in to a story reported by Sun.Star Staff Reporter,Reynaldo G. Navales on Thursday, 22 May 08. The details of this murder were quite horrifying and made my blood boil with anger. The victim was Keith Joseph Cook, 68, single, living at 4-26, California St, Villa Sol. This subdivision hosts a large Expat community as well as local citizens and is a relatively peaceful community even though it has seen its fair share of crime and violence in the past. Keith was brutally murdered by three local residents who lived next door. Two were men, one only 17, and one woman, single, age 31. These assholes not only murdered Keith but chopped up his body and placed the remains in a traveling bag and left it in one of the victims room. Mr. Navales reported that a witness, the sister of one of the suspects fled to Olongapo with her boyfriend and after 4 days tipped off the police in Olongapo as to what happened. Maj Aspe, Station Four Commander had already received information that a killing had taken place and along with Maj Tan had started their investigation when notified by the Olongapo City Police and immediately were able to apprehend these despicable individuals. You might ask, what fortune did the killers get from this murder? Well, how about a computer monitor, speakers, Ipod, and an MP3 player. According to the reporter, they also obtained a laptop but ended up burning it because it was already filled with the victim’s blood. I wish that these three suspects could be placed against a wall and shot but that won’t happen. At the very least the 17 year old should be tried as an adult and all three given life sentences. What a shame, for someone to reach 68 years of age and to have his life ended this way.

    Hmmm…

Charges have been filed… at the end of the week, of course, as to insure as little attention as possible.

High marks should be given to USFK for taking care of the child…

…quite contrary to another story involving a USFK 30-something contractor at Osan having seeex with a 15 year-old American dependent… in which case Osan told the father, “too bad”. No doubt, a justifiable reason for murder for some of you fathers out there.

I should add that, along with juicy bars and whooorehouses, brokers and the Internet are other places not to find a wife.

It is indeed a sad thing for me, reading all the judgmental thoughts towards my sister, Lea. She has been a wonderful sister and one good disciplinarian mom to her little girl, Bianca. It was a big disappointment for all of us here in the Philippines, when the army investigator broke the news to us. Until now, we are still in denial about her death. The pain is still there. And I’m really pissed off with other people who can be so insensitive towards our feelings…
I hate the comments posted by Apple Pie. Seems like she knew my sister pretty well for making some lame ass judgment. She does not have any consideration and respect to our family. I presume she is one “screw up”, pathetic person who needs a lot of attention. I strongly recommend for you my dear Apple Pie, to get a life! Do not wait for the time to come, that you will also get a taste of your own dose of medicine. If you do not have anything nice to say towards my sister, then you shut the F–CK up, bitch!

And to everyone else who continues to judge my sister, Lea Gray… May I suggest to you guys, have a “self check” first, ’cause you are not one perfect person, with a great, perfect life. And I believe you do not have every right to judge her, nor insult her, knowing my sister is dead, who does not have the ability to speak out and defend herself. So, the best possible thing to do now, is to SHUT UP!!!

    Celeste,

I am so sorry for your and your family’s loss. Although I did not know your sister personally, I saw her out often with her daughter. She doted on Bianca and the love between them was quite obvious.

I am truly sorry for your loss.

    Celeste;
I do understand your anger as I have a loved one in harms way. Take the advice of an old man. Speak of your sister with love in your heart. That is an honor to her memory. I never met lea but if Chris loved her then so do I. Seek solice with God who knows what we know not.

No one will understand what we are going through right now, not unless you would also encounter losing a loved one who was murdered in abroad. And yet most people can be so inconsiderate.
The words thrown towards my sister were not very nice, so you do not expect me to say something nice either.

And to Dan, I would also throw the same exact question, “what about the words you typed as well towards women?”

Dan, watch your manners. Your previous comments proved your worthlessness already. Just give your respects rather than deepening the wound. Thanks.

    Celeste;
On the off chance that you did not recognize my name, I am Christopher’s Father. I did lose someone is this tragedy; a Daughter-in-law I never had the pleasure to meet and her beautiful daughter, who seems to bring joy to everyone she meets. Chris is still concerned about her welfare when he might well be expected to be gravely concerned about his own. I challenge you to grow as a spiritual person. I challenge you not to rush to judgenment. You see, believing you know what happened doesn’t make it so. I know my son’s heart and I don’t see him doing this terrible thing, but that is my belief. I pray you find some sense of peace and turn your attention toward Bianca who needs you more than these bitter persons who are trying to defame your sister.

I am aware of your existence, Bernard. I do not have any judgment towards your son yet, knowing he’s not been convicted. I am only tring to express my anger to all the people who’s been saying a lot of bad things towards my sister. I don’t expect anyone to understand me, but I’m sure you know what we are going through right now.

NoRespect, I would like to ask you, do you know Christopher and his family personally. Seems like you know a lot about them.
    Just curious.

    Celeste;
NoRespect speaks like a non-person. You know, someone who does not have a life. They get their kicks by using SHOCK as a tool to elicit emotional responses. Please, leave this person wrapped up in his/her own disease and little world. As for myself, I would not dignify the writer with a direct response.

Dan will never learn to respect women, Navi, for he does not even know how to give respect for himself.
