Good news for everyone in 2nd ID land, Beaver’s in Toekgo-ri that was previously put off limits for underage drinking and a few other reasons is now officially back on limits:
A colorful barbecue restaurant nestled in the hills outside Camp Hovey is back on limits for servicemembers.
Beaver’s BBQ in Toekgo-ri received the green light following an agreement by owner “Beaver” Lee to make changes, a spokesman for the 2nd Infantry Division’s 1st Heavy Brigade Combat Team said Wednesday.
Beaver’s was placed off-limits by 1st Brigade on April 18 following reports of underage drinking and a soldier’s joyride through Dongducheon on a motor scooter belonging to Beaver’s wife. The off-limits order was enforced by U.S. Army Garrison-Red Cloud, also known as Area I.
At an Area I Armed Forces Disciplinary Board meeting May 16, officials said some of the many pictures hanging on Beaver’s walls included soldiers exposing themselves.
“[The] bottom line is that the process works,” said brigade spokesman Maj. Mike Nicholson in an e-mail statement. “Beaver’s had some things which they were not in compliance with regards to safety and welfare of soldiers, they have corrected themselves and the board voted not to place it permanently off-limits.” [Erik Slavin - Stars & Stripes]
It is good to see that USFK gave the club owner an opportunity to fix the issues that put him on the off limits list in a relatively quick manner. I know one thing, I’m definitely stopping by the next time I’m in town.

I can’t help but notice that USFK wasted no time in adding him to the off-limits power point slide at http://www.usfk.mil/usfk/index.html?/usfk/offlimits/index.asp however they can’t seem to react as quickly to remove him.
For the record, Mr. Lee has always had a good customer base among the Koreans, and still does. He started out catering to Koreans. Every once in a while a GI would wander up there and ask if it was ok to come in. Beaver would welcome them, and more importantly, NOT ATTEMPT TO RIP THEM OFF.
Beaver did not set out with the intention of his business becoming a GI hang out. The soldiers sought him out, not the other way around.
It is a shame this happened. I would have to say that Beaver is one of the few, if not the only, Koreans in TDC that would genuinely qualify as a “Good Neighbor”, even though he does not participate (reap the benefits) of the program. What everyone does know to be true is he takes care of soldiers and really cares about their welfare when they are at his establishment or when he or his wife are transporting them back to the gate, before curfew, for free.
I am still wondering when the good USFK folks are going to declare Lotte World, Everland, and practically every business outside the ville off-limits. These places do not card for alcohol purchases and our soldiers are at risk! Come on USFK, stand by your principles.

Having been stationed at Camp Red Cloud, the I Corps Hq would fire the 105 Howitzer (blanks) every morning to signal the start of the duty day. It was noted one morning, that someone had put a large number of golf balls in the cannon and subsequently blew out all the windows of the enlisted club, just up the street. After that the barral was checked every morning before firing. I wonder if the practice is still used.

“off limits…for a few other reasons”
Too bad no one is saying what the “other reasons” were, lest the control freaks be held up to more ridicule.
If scooter riding is justification for being off-limits, what’s next - bicycle riding?

Gerry, they use a 75mm pack howitzer nowadays firing blank shells, and if someone were to pack it with golf balls, I think the only thing in danger would be the soccer field and baseball diamond.

Anybody who doesn’t recognize this all is a scam is part of the problem rather than the solution.
In typical USFK fashion, they place a “non-connected”, caring, family-owned business off-limits for minor and unspecific reasons while ignoring the “connected”, GI-screewing places openly involved in human trafficking, prostitution, black marketing and every imaginable illegal scam designed to part GI Joe from his money.
This has been an observable pattern since I started doing business near military bases.
The reasons for this action range from pressure on senior leadership from “association” golf buddies and Korean wives… to direct payoffs. Couple this with pressure to keep a few bars on the Off-limits List to show “something is being done” and the little guys just trying to make a living have no chance.

Hope all that american beef he serves hasn’t cut down on his Korean patronage….

Mark, I stand corrected. It could very well have been a 75MM Pack Howitzer. While I do remember the baseball field, about 100 yds north of the howitzer slightly to the left was an old barracks type building that was used at the time as an enlisted club. Probobly gone by now.

Nice try but he does not serve beef. Pork ribs are the order of the day and they are cheaper off post.

Darn, and I thought if you said it on the internet everyone would believe you. It works for Koreans…..

Hmmm…
You know, when incidents which suggest corruption among USFK leadership come to light, it gets very, very quiet.
I wonder why so few, especially under the relative anonymity of an Internet blog, are unable to post a brief message condemning illegal, immoral and unethical behavior by individuals who hold no small degree of influence over the integrity of our military and the direction of our country… not to mention the lives of fellow servicemembers.
This silence and apathy is taken as a signal of acceptance to continue dirty business as usual by those in “leadership” who are more concerned about themselves than you, the military or our country.
Leadership can be forced into a correct course of action if there are enough people bringing attention to wrongdoing… but that requires engaged citizens and honorable servicemembers.
So, my question is (and I’m only slightly trolling for an intelligent response) is…
…what kind of man can watch unfairness, injustice and corruption, and then look away… especially when it is so easy to speak up.
I am frequently reminded, in situations like this, that many (most?) “professional” soldiers are simply paycheck players more interested in themselves than what is best for their military or their country.
Shame.

Here are this year’s Dirtbag Finder Leadersboard:
1. Mark -1
Note that who ever totals the most points at the end of the year, I will purchase for them a three-holing human-trafficked juicy of their choice using the proceeds I have accumulated by shaking down local business owners, awarding shady contracts and selling base access. If you like this website than please support it by ignoring the actions of USFK leadership in everything from black marketing to open protutition by “Good Neighbor” golf buddies.
Also if you have a situation that you think would make for a great Dirtbag Finder feel free to submit it to me through my e-mail address which you can find on my about page. Thanks.
