General Sharp to Announce Curfew Decision Next Month

» by GI Korea in: USFK

I would be extremely surprised if General Sharp changes anything in regards to the curfew and driving policies:

Expect a decision on the future of the U.S. Forces Korea curfew by the end of July, USFK commander Gen. Walter Sharp told soldiers Thursday.

Sharp took questions from soldiers during lunch at the Commanding General’s Mess and told them he was carefully evaluating the curfew and vehicle ownership, which is restricted in some areas and not allowed for most servicemembers north of Seoul.

“At the end of July, Sergeant Major [Bob Winzenried] and I will have made a decision on them,” Sharp told an audience of about 100 people. [Stars & Stripes]

Even if General Sharp doesn’t change the policies I do hope at least he gives a better answer then soldiers need to be tucked into bed at night.

A lot will depends on how many problems occur in July. Any major incidents will be used as a reason not to lift/change curfew.

If waiting to see if an incident is going to happen in July is being used to justify whether to remove or keep the curfew then General Sharpe should just keep the curfew. Incidents are going to happen whether you have a curfew or not, what is important is how you react when an incident occurs.

If a major incident happens and the USFK commander hits everyone with a curfew in response, he might as well as kept the curfew in place in the first place if he doesn’t have the moral courage to not implement the curfew in response to a major incident.

I for one don’t think the curfew should be removed and still favor implementing the old Warrior Pass system I have advocated before here. It is a good compromise between the concerns of the command and soldiers that I think would make everyone concerned happy.

However, if the relocation plan actually happens and tours in Korea are normalized in the future then the curfew should be canned.

Counldnt agree with you more..If anything the general should use Kadena Air Base as an example on how to regulate the curfew and give the power to the base commanders, and or group commanders. And the curfew dosent matter since a major incident will happen irregardless (kadena for instance), and its all on how its handled…
