The spread of this kind of public hysteria through the Web is the dark side to the Information Age. Ironic considering ROK has always been so quick of late to point out that it is among the most "wired" countries in the world.

For me, your last paragraph spells out the important part but it doesn't get looked at much in the limited coverage of Korea outside of Korea.

The anti-US groups never stop. They are out there rain, sleet, or snow trying to drum up business. They, including the media, don't control Korean society.

Korean society goes into one of these events when it feels like it.

The media does have influence by doing things like promoting the civic group's message and omitting the US rebuttal, but by in large, the media responds to what the people want to hear. The media is more a guide to Korea's current mood at any given point than a controller of it.

The blame for anti-US habits rests on the shoulders of the society as a hole.

The only people I cut some slack for are those over 70 years of age.

i predict the next anti american flare up will happen at the olympics.

phelps vs park tae hwan in 200m freestyle.

phelps will edge out the win, but since it was timed using american technology, there will be mass protests.

"Also ROK Drop readers also have long known that US beef is safer then domestic Korean beef since Korea refuses to meet global safety standards for beef set forth by the OIE."

I now have a PhD in mass hysteria, nincompoopery, hypocrisy, and nerd rage. I also refute the claims that all Koreans have PhD's in Mad Cow disease, gained in less than a month no less, and all protesters, of age or not, should be punished in the same way that the fake-degree holders had been punished.

I would also be satisfied if they had a TV show, similar to Fear Factor and made them all eat rocky-mountain oysters, raw, while they wore those ridiculous cow outfits, with US soldiers walking around with a large cut-out of candlegirl with googly eyes, drooling, flower over her ear and Korean flag on her forehead.

It's a nice visual. As much as it would please my inner-Korean *ahem* immature side to release my han, my sensible western values tell me that I have to make money, not dilly-dally, and to let the nerds have there day in the sun. Oh, that, and continue to encourage troop withdrawals and reposition them to secure US borders.
