Obama Claims to Support North Korean Human Rights

US Presidential hopeful Barack Obama wants the Bush Administration to do more in regards to the human rights of North Korean refugees in China:

Presumptive U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama Friday urged the Bush administration to press the issue of forced repatriation of North Korean defectors to China, often under fire for human rights violations.

“When they do leave, they should not be forcibly returned into persecution; they should have the protection to which asylum seekers and refugees are entitled under international law,” Obama said in a letter to the Korean Church Coalition (KCC) for North Korea Freedom obtained here Friday. “These issues should be on the table when we talk to countries in the region, including China.”  [Yonhap]

Notice that Obama says refugees should not “be forcibly returned into persecution” which would be a statement I would find encouraging, but I don’t considering Obama’s past.  Obama’s past history shows him ignoring the kidnapping and killing of the husband of his own constituents by the North Koreans after promising to do something about it for mere political expediency.

So how can anyone know these current words are not more words spoken for mere political expediency as well?

I agree with Andy analysis that so far the realities never match the rhetoric of all these politicians.
