Here is something I think Koreans should show a bit of outrage about:
Three enlisted marines were killed Wednesday while standing guard at their base in the southeastern city of Pohang from what officials believe was the accidental collapse of a 38-year-old guard post.
A 22-year-old corporal, identified only by his surname Joo, and a 20-year-old private, identified only as Lee, were found dead under heavy debris from the two-story building, officials at the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. [Yonhap]
It is ridiculous that three Marines are killed in such a way. Why wasn’t there any inspections of the structural integrity of the guard post? How many other guards posts are in the same condition? Has this happened before and nothing has been done to correct it?
This is something that would make for an interesting investigative news report that could have some lasting impact in improving the safety conditions of ROK servicemembers. However, I’m sure PD Diary is too busy looking for their next mad cow scare to actually do some real journalism.

If one Korean gets MAD COW our of 4,000,000,000, it is much more important then some old spy lady getting shot in the back or useless soldiers dying. Get your priorites straight.

If this was in Pohang, it was the ROK 1st Marines. Their buildings date back to the Korean War — and maybe older. Like the US Marines they don’t live in nice comfy 2 to a room with shared kitchen and bathroom facitlities.
They’re tough…and they don’t want it any other way. My nephew was a ROK Marine…and he was one of those bozos that refused to go into the Army until there was an opening in the Marines. They are dedicated — and probably look at the building as one of those “shit happens” incidents…but the Ministry of Defense will run around making a lot of noise about inspecting facilities so it will never happen again.
Does this sound like the US military? Remember the comfy quonset huts on the DMZ bases from the Korean War that were still used until a few years ago? Yeah, right. The US military is a lot different from the ROK … NOT …

“Shattered represents what average Americans”
Thank you for calling me an average American. Americans are great people who have made the world a safer and greater place at their own expence. What other people would stop the slaughter of barefoot straw hut dwellers half the world away. They did that in hell hole named Korea, and they are spit on for it. To be honest, I am much too modest to even compare myself to an average American. But if ever, by the grace of GOD, I could be an average Amerian, or even the lowest of Americans, it would be an honour to attain such greatness.
Thank you “tom”, because an average American, and even the lowest American, is better then the greatest kyopo.

Shattered is chinese and his passion for Americans is just rhetoric.
He is here because he wants to give advice to Americans on USA-Korea relationship. He really loves America.
By the way, Shattered I heard that the Chinese are training hard for the Olympics. At least the gold medal for shooting belongs to China. Look how hard they train:

Found this article funny, to say the least…being a retired marine.
ROK Marines are hard alright…as in hard-headed. Their commanders need to start upgrading their facilities, instead of constantly draining off resources into their pockets. We U.S. Marines live the way we do NOT by choice, but yes, we are proud of our hard life style. Will take steak over C-Rats/MREs any day, but will make do with what we have.
The more I observe lately about Korea, of which I have many years slogging around, the more it reminds me of the 4th World of the Philippines.
Still prefer Asia to living in the states, but what gives with you asians? Is doing the right thing really that hard for you?

Saw the photos of the funeral for the three Marines with four star Marines and down — along with four star admirals and down. Family grief and military condolences.
Defense ministry doing the right moves. But somehow I still feel that in a few weeks it will be back to business as usual — and all those promised inspections of facilities will be forgotten.
