I have to wonder what these guys do all day considering there will never be a Japanese invasion of Dokdo:
A total of 18 officers are vying to be named to a five-member security force defending the Dokdo islets. According to the National Police Agency, a group of police officers with at least 10 years of experience have applied for the security force. The recruitment responds to growing calls to replace the existing guards with well-trained police officers in the wake of Japan’s recent claim to sovereignty over the islets in the East Sea. [KBS Global]
For anyone wondering who the current guards of Dokdo are there are young police officers from Ulleongdo:
Currently, young police officers who belong to the Ulleung Island Security Force are stationed on the Dokdo islets for security purposes. They guard the islets for 24 hours a day against Japanese patrol boats, etc., using advanced systems and equipment. They are also equipped with communications facilities to report to adjacent Naval Police, Navy, and Air Force troops in case of emergency. They are empowered to arrest or capture any boat berthing the Dokdo islets. They are stationed in Dongdo.
Considering Korean police usually just sleep in their cars all day any way, the job duties for Dokdo are probably quite similar which makes them instantly qualified.

Two words: Pitcher - catcher (and I am not talking about baseball)

I thought they were selected already. Five police lieutenants were promoted to captain — and like you, I wonder what a 50 man contingent needs with 5 captains are needed to supervise 45 four-stripe sergeants.

Grammar patrol — “compete for” and “vie for” synonyms
Yeah, I know…I have nothing better to do with my time as my site is all warped out of shape…
But I thought about why they needed five Captains. Expect to see the appearance of two patrol boats permanently anchored at the docks (or ashore ready for immediate launch) — and start of regular police patrols around the 22,000 sq km area.
