The usual idiocy once again last month with no crimes happening that were too serious. Another DUI though can be added to the ongoing trend of DUIs in USFK. That makes for 17 DUIs in the past 16 months. Not good considering the vast majority of USFK soldiers are not allowed to drive to begin with.

USFK Court-Martial Results for July 2008
At a general court-martial on 15 July 2008, Specialist Brennan J. Miller, 1st Battalion, 15th Field Artillery, Camp Casey, was convicted of making and uttering worthless checks. His adjudged sentence was reduction to the grade of Private (E-1), forfeiture of $898.00 pay per month for 2 months, confinement for thirty days, and a reprimand.
At a general court-martial on 18 July 2008, Private (E-2) Victoria V. Clayton, 348th Quartermaster Company, 194th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion, was convicted of larceny and attempted larceny. Her adjudged sentence was reduction to Private (E-1), forfeiture of all pay and allowances, confinement for 14 months and a bad-conduct discharge.
Results of ROK Criminal Prosecutions for July 2008
In Jeonju District Court on 9 July 2008, Airman First Class Michael L. Pasquet, Jr. of 8th Security Forces Squadron, was convicted of trespass and destruction of property. His adjudged sentence was a fine of 1,000,000 Won.
In Seoul Central District Court on 1 July 2008, PFC Timothy L. Cunningham of Company B, 4/2 Aviation Battalion, was convicted of DUI. His adjudged sentence was a fine of 1,000,000 Won.
In Seoul Central District Court on 17 July 2008, SGT Kevin N. Dinh of 25th Transportation Battalion, was convicted of a violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specified Crimes (Fleeing from an Accident). His adjudged sentence was imprisonment for 10 months, suspended for 2 years.
In Seoul Central District Court on 22 July 2008, CPO Joshua A. Yunos, a Sailor assigned to Headquarters, US Forces Korea, was convicted of a violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specified Crimes (Fleeing from an Accident). His adjudged sentence was a fine of 6,000,000 Won.
In Seoul Central District Court on 28 July 2008, PFC Chu Y. Kim, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 121 Combat Support Hospital, was convicted of violations of the Act on the Control of Narcotics. His adjudged sentence was imprisonment for 1 year and 6 months, suspended for 3 years, and a civil assessment in the amount of 2,897,500 Won.

PFC Kim dumb move for narcotics use — and he's headed out the door. But my question is how the heck did the courts come up with a sum of 2,897,500 won??? Couldn't they just round it off?

I think PFC Kim's civil assessment is forfeiture of the subject narcotics, paraphernalia, and proceeds from whatever he was doing. W2,897,500 is the value of whatever it is that was confiscated — and that's a lot of money. I'm surprised he got such a light sentence, although the court undoubtedly factored in the Army's certain punishment as well.
