If you are one of those foreigners that can’t get enough about the Dokdo issue, well here is your chance to impress the locals:

It seems like the Korea Times just loves having foreigners write in about Dokdo.

jeez. Can I write about why Jejudo belongs to Korea and go there instead? Or maybe Hawaii? Sorry, but a trip for me and my four most Korean friends to a couple rainy rocks with lots of seagulls just isn’t much of a carrot.

This looks like a pathetic attempt to get some real research done for them because they have obviously failed in that department.
I’ve done the Ulleungdo/Dokdo trip with my wife and, as GI mentioned from his Dokdo adventure, it was quite the spectical (Ulleungdo was beautiful). In fact, my (Korean) wife was a little embarrassed by what seemed to be false and manufactured emotions pouring from the Korean’s when they saw the glorious rock protrusions.
I say all that, but I still know to keep quiet when it comes to Dokdo conversations at home. A happy marriage = no discussion of Dokdo.

This is sad. Somehow it reminds me of the “Wow Korea” campaign going on right now which depicts two kids being overly excited that Seoul happens to have a river that runs through the heart of the city, as if most other major metro cities in the world dont have a huge river. I have to agree that Jeju island is something to promote, not Dokdo.

One disadvantage to being a Hermit Kingdom and still pretty much ethnocentric for so long is you have to pretty much bride foreign interest and support to your causes.
What’s the big deal? Maybe the island could prosper if more people thought it was Japanese? (tongue in cheek) There was a survey that suggests that some Korean products have done well because many foreigners believed that the manufactures; LG, Samsung, and Hyundai, were Japanese brand names. (tongue further in cheek)

Can my critical ‘anti-korean dokdo’ essay win?
If so, can I donate my tickets to someone who give a f#ck?

I would so laugh my a** off if someone submit a “Dokdo is Takeshima, and is Japanese Territory” essay.
And they actually report about it… but I guess they won’t… or maybe they will.

Why would the Korea Times have a contest for Americans writing an essay on the Japanese island of Takeshima?
