Good news from the beaches of Taean:
The marine ecosystem in the Taean, South Chungcheong Province area is back to normal, as most of the pollutants from Korea’s worst-ever oil spill have been cleaned up.
The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute said Wednesday that the density of oil in the seawater and other pollution indicators in the Taean area are currently lower than those of advanced nations.
The survival rate of major aqua-farmed products, such as oysters and clams, has also recovered to over 80 percent of the norm, up from about 50 percent after the spill.
The government plans to decide whether to allow sea farmers to resume business after it has conducted test farming of oysters and clams. [KBS Global]
The oil spill happened last December and a massive clean up effort that featured quite possibly the largest volunteer effort in Korean history to clean up was launched. This volunteer clean up effort also included the participation of hundreds of USFK servicemembers as well. It is good to see that such efforts to clean the beach have been successful and hopefully the fishermen in the area that have been greatly impacted by this oil spill will soon be able to get back to work again.
