8th FW Hosting Static Display (4 Oct 2008)

In Aug 2008, the ROKAF held the first open house at Kunsan in over 30 years. The ROKAF held a static display — in conjunction with the Automotive Show — and I assume this will be in the same location on Kunsan AB. Incidentally, the “emergency landing runway” that was used is actually the FIRST runway of Kunsan. Atleast this is a start after 30 years of not having an open house for the local community. (See Kunsan Air Base to take part in Korean air show (Aug 2008).)

The ROKAF-sponsored static display was a welcome event as it was something that I’d been preaching about for many years. Well, it looks like the 8th Fighter Wing is FINALLY going to follow suit. Believe me, folks, only positive things with the local community can come of these open house events.

The U.S. 8th Fighter Wing at Kunsan Air Base in North Jeolla Province will hold a static display viewing of fixed and rotary wing aircraft and ground demonstrations of U.S. and South Korean military assets Oct. 4, the wing said Wednesday in a press release. The exhibition will open to the public 11 a.m.-5 p.m., it said. Aircraft on display are F-16K, F-16, F-15, F-15K, F-4, A-10, KT-1, T-50, AV-8, HH-32 and HH-60G, according to the release. (Source: Korea Times.)

However, it would have been nice if they had invited the USFK Army units to attend with some of the Army aviation assets. Those AH-64 choppers make a hell of a noise over Kunsan City when they are down there to practice Hellfire training on Chikdo and I’m sure the local folks would like to see them up close as well. The USAF A-10, F-16 and F-15 are nice, but this is atleast a start.

If there are any readers of this blog from Kunsan AB, I’d love to know how this turned out. Numbers of locals attending, comments and impressions?
