BoA’s Debut In America “Heats Up”

That is according to the Chosun Ilbo:

BoA’s new single, “Eat You Up”, has earned an immediate positive response from U.S. listeners.

The song was introduced on music sites MyTunes, Amazon, AOL, eMusic and MySpace at 3:00 am on the 22nd (Korean Standard Time) and reached 3rd on iTunes in the Dance category and 10th on Amazon’s list of Hot New Releases in MP3 Downloads and 21st among Today’s Top MP3 Songs.

Upon hearing the song, American netizens showed strong interest, saying it was fantastic or addictive. The single has been available at music sites Melon, Dosirak, Cyworld of Korea, and Mu-mo.net of Japan since the 22nd. [Chosun Ilbo]

Now if you go over to Amazon’s hot new MP3 releases, BoA is no where to be found in the Top 100 much less the Top 10. Heck she didn’t even make it into the Top 200. She is currently in fact number 213 and dropping fast.

I guarantee her numbers were originally inflated by the number of Koreans and Korean-Americans that downloaded the single when it was first released. Now with that out of the way her single is settling into obscurity. Her single is getting beat out by artists such as the Spinto Band, Whispertown 2000, The Donkeys, The Kodaly Quartet, and host of other groups I have never heard of before.

You can view the music video of BoA’s single “Eat You Up” here.

In my opinion this song is shockingly bad. If she thinks this is going to allow her to compete with the J-Lo’s, Shakira’s, and the Beyonce’s of the American music industry she will learn a hard lesson just like Rain did.

She is popular among Japanophile/Asiaphile Americans as well, probably more so than Ko-Ams. I imagine there were a lot of Caucasian nerds picking up the song. Not that it's a reliable demographic.

But if there's one thing US citizens have an amazing tolerance for, it's terrible pop music.

I'm not sure where GI Korea has been. Boa hasn't been that active in Korea for almost a decade. Her popularity was mostly driven by the Japanese market. It's too bad she had to ruin her act by trying to be like just another dime a dozen slutty American pop star on drugs. Real too bad.

If you looking for someone with talent, I would recommend Han-na Chang. Granted, she is a celloist and not a singer, but it would be a safe bet that people will be listening to her performances 50+ years from now. I cannot say the same about BoA, J-Lo, Shakira, or Beyonce.

Forget Rain. If Utada Hikaru can't make it in the States, can't make it in the States, I doubt Boa will. (You can find Utada's official album site here: http://www6.islandrecords.com/utada/site/home.php…
