Courtesy of DPRK Econ Watch we now know what the inside of a North Korean passport looks like:

I am actually surprised there is no picture of Kim Il-sung or Kim Jong-il though it could be somewhere else in the passport.

Korea Beat: They spell “passport” differently. ?? in the south, ?? in the north.
Many Korean words that begin with the silent consonant character “?” in the South are spelled with a “?” in North Korea. So the name “?” becomes “?,” and in this case “??” is spelled “??.”
I think it’s partly dialectic and partly a case of the North wanting to distinguish itself from the South.

What I’ve heard is that the South changed its spelling rules sometime after World War II. But I’ve never heard of any reason for the change. There have been other orthographic changes over the years too, for instance ???? used to be ???? (which gets over two million hits on Google).
