It will be interesting to see what the Chinese reaction to this will be:
The nation’s Supreme Court has approved asylum for a group of Chinese nationals for the first time.
The court ruled in favor of Yuan Wenrui, a member of the Chinese Democratic Party, and his wife and their ten-year-old son.
The family filed for refuge status five years ago after entering South Korea as tourists.
The court also granted refuge status to two other Chinese nationals leading the South Korean chapter of an overseas Chinese coalition calling for democracy in China.
The court acknowledged their fear of persecution due to their involvement in anti-government activities in accordance with the United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees.
Currently, some 200 Chinese including Falun Gong practitioners residing in the country are seeking refugee status. No Chinese national has ever been granted asylum in South Korea before. [KBS Global]
