Gaffe-prone Japan PM apologises over doctor remark

» by in: Japan

He said doctors were lacking common sense.

Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso apologised Wednesday for appearing to insult doctors, an important political interest group, by saying many of them lack common sense.Japanese broadcaster NHK quoted Aso, who was asked about a shortage of doctors in localities at a governors’ meeting, as saying: “Frankly speaking, I think there are many (doctors) that lack common sense quite a bit. We need to seriously talk about what to do with them.”

When later asked by reporters about his remark, the 68-year-old premier apologised.

“That was not what I meant … If serious doctors had felt unpleasant, then I am sorry,” he said.

Doctors are an influential bloc of voters in Japan who have traditionally supported the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. But in recent years, some have been drifting away to back the opposition.

Aso has more common sense than the South Korean official who said- “Women are more developed creatures than men since they have one more hole.” So lets be easy on the PM. Korea Information Society Development Institute chief Suk Ho-ick has him beat by a mile.

Aso is a great fan of comic books. he reads nothing but comics. No newspapers, no weeklies, no magazines, no serious reading materials. About a week ago, he failed to read simple chinese characters(kanji), ??????????from the text of his Diet speech. He is now a laughingstock comparable to Dan Quayle. Aso has more common sense? Pot and Kettle. LOL

“Women are more developed creatures than men since they have one more hole.”

One could counter this arguement and say that a part was just left out, also…but who in their right mind would want to believe that?

I don't know if this has anything to do with the subject or not, but after reading NATTO's comment I just had to mention it.

Two days ago I was channel surfing and I came up on a show that got my attention. It was a Japanese medical drama that would probably be compared to the American 'ER' drama. I couldn't understand much of what was being said because the dialog was in Japanese and the subtitles were in Korean, but something about it fascinated me. It was the stylized behaviors and interactions between the characters.

I caught enoung of an english language conversion in the show to pick up the term 'Team Medical Dragon.' I googled that to learn that it translated from the title of a Japanese drama called 'Iryu.' The TV drama series is based on a popular Japanese manga comic book.

The hospital is extemely bare and sanitary. You rarely see any interaction with patients. Almost all focus is on the doctors and some nursing and resident staff. Watching the actors in their character roles, it's undeniable how well they capture the manga appearance. It's easy to recognize the stoic and brooding lead characters, the over dramatic comic characters, and the piercing and calculating antagonists.

Anyway, after reading NATTO's comment, I couldn't help wondering how much effect this series or any other like it affects the president's perception of doctors and the medical professions.
