In some ways I agree with JoeC; the idea being that the views of the North Korean people are never taken into account when projecting a Chinese occupation of North Korea. Just because no one takes opinion polls (e.g., John Zogby does not have an operation in Pyongyang) doesn't mean that "public opinion", here defined as the willingness to engage in acts of resistance, won't make itself known. We're likely dealing with a very different set of circumstances than in 1945, when the CIA thought Koreans would be very willing to work with foreign occupation force. Perhaps debating the future with China occupying some part of Korea is pointless, but if history is any precedent (CPV in DPRK 1950-58, anyone?) it is worth talking about the prospect.

The original post was in Nov 2008. President Roh had only been out of office for a short time. South Korea was leaning far left during his tenure. There were serious questions about what would happen if the north collapsed at that time. South Korea had pretty much shelved any action toward the north under Rohs rule.

Other than the time frame involved I have no argument with what you have said. Times change.

Sorry to burst your bubble but, your scenario is highly unlikely in the event North collapses. If the PLA enters North Korea for any reason, it will be considered an act of aggression, a start of war. Nobody is buying that friendship treaty bs. I am sure, Kim and ROK forces are ready to lock & roll with PLA! I would like to see Korea reunite, Korean people have suffered long enough, certainly PRC, CCP have no right to decide fate of another country. Chinese government & people need to address their own internal issues first and by god, you guys have problems, that needs your attention. Solving China's problems will keep you guys busy until the kingdom come!

Chicom,

North Korea is not a Chinese province. What the hell makes you think that PLA could just roll right in and take over North Korea? Just accept the fact that, North & South Korea will never be part of China, you arrogant bastard!

PETE, I fail to see where China may be the only player capable of doing anything. The Chinese economy is suffering as well and is currently having significant problems with unemployment and factory shutdowns. While the US is having its problems the remainder of the world is affected as well. Russia's stock market has tanked over 75%. Japan, Germany and the US are still the most afluent in the world. The Chinese economy has been growing in leaps and bounds, but they are comming from way behind and have a billion people to manage. I doubt China would look forward to any collapse of North Korea.

The upcomming world recession may hasten the NK collaspe. China may be the only regional player capable of doing anything. SK can't afford it. Russia is too corrupt. Japan does not have the global reach capability - plus SK would not like Japan in NK. The US is tired of war and ready to pull out of the Mid East. However, I still hope to see a unified Korea.

Somebody should get the memo out to the North Korean people. I think they will want to have a say on accepting annexation to China. They haven't had a chance to sign off on that yet.

If the Chinese did move into NK I would fully expect them to install some kind of military government similar to Burma that is Kim regime-lite. Comment left via Kindle.
