New USTR nominee not a “free trader”

Latest from Wayne Madsen Report.

Xavier Becerra is Obama’s choice for US Trade Representative. Becerra is Hispanic and US House of Representative (D-CA). He fits the mold for Latino payback in representation. But what is significant is he is definitely NOT a “free trader.” America’s free trade system “is not only broken but it is broken completely,” Becerra said back in 2006 when he argued against the Oman Free Trade Agreement. Says he regrets his vote against NAFTA. Opposed CAFTA but voted for the Peru FTA. Voted to admit China to the WTO. Has a 39 percent rating from the Cato Institute on free trade. Voted against withdrawing from the WTO.

For starters, Becerra is a member of Sen. Bernie Sanders Progressive Caucus, which has long pushed congresses for fairer trade deals. This matches Obama’s hardline stance against the ROKUS FTA — especially dealing with autos. The handwriting is starting to appear on the walls as to the fate of the ROKUS FTA.

Hyundai and Kia opened plants in the US, while Ford and GM relocated their plants to Mexico. Do the Big 3 automakers really help American workers or only their CEO's?

Tim: The Big 3 automakers (were coerced to) "help" American workers … to the point of self-destruction.

Blogger: Scare quotes also appropriate in latter para around world "fairer."

The big three are going bankrupt anyway.

Yeah, it makes perfect sense to protect virtually bankrupt companies with terrible management.

See if this will make any difference for them in improving their businesses and making better cars, I really doubt it will.

Maybe the Big 3 should play the “Remember if it weren’t for us then you would have lost WW2″ card.

If he’s not a free trader, I wonder why he regrets his vote against NAFTA.

I thought the KORUS FTA was pretty much dead even before the election and now it looks like the final nails have been put into the coffin of this deal. You have to feel bad for Lee Myung-bak though considering all the crap he had put up with over the US beef issue for probably nothing.

    I don't think it's dead at all.
