Their land is tiny and they are surrounded by ocean or enemies at north and across the small ocean. They used to sell car only Hyundai and people had no choice to buy them because not only the tax for imported cars but they put a special plate for imported ones so they were noticeable in public and the IRS will search the house if someone buy foreign when it was in 70's til late 90's. That's how Hyundai and other car makers make money. Also, they used thin metal outer shell for inland cars while they use thick for exporting so people used to buy the car in the US and import back when they go back to Korea. Up til 1988, because of the security reason, everyone has to get permit to travel abroad also from government. No one really travel outside of countries because of tension between north and the south but the real reason was to save dollars at bank. People has no choice to buy their stuff even though they knew that their stuffs are crappy. And, I think it's still very close in phone technology. I have read that people complaining about how expensive their phones are and how old style and useless and yet it's expensive. Government is still controlling in excuses of this and that and putting it off to import even though people want iphone. And, now I hear people are like hooray!!! and government are using media to promote the superiority of the new phone from samsung but people are not responding and they tell that it's fake. People in Korea are crazy about internet because their country is isolated because of north korea, and china which is communism and they are together with north and japan due to the historic conflict, so internet is the only window opportunity to see and experience what's out there. So, apparently they look very advanced in technology of communication, but the real story is they are still using 2 G in major communication companies and there was no choice but to pay 1000 dollar for the phone that has much less sensitive responsible touch phone than apple Iphone because that was the only pda phone. They are making patriotic so that people buy Korea inferior phones so that the big companies which is primarily connected to politics and enjoyed the monopoly that how they got the money for new researches and testing out with crappy stuffs in 80's and 90's and don't have to worry about failing but keep on pushing cheapness for their product is not working for common people any longer. And, people write their comment and blogs as their right to use it good product whether it's foreign or their own, and they are feeling much emancipated now. Plus, they are very applicative about apple making such phone and they are encouraging apple company.
