Army Cuts Number of Reenlistment Bonuses

» by in: Recruiting

You can tell the Army is expecting a surge in recruiting due to the bad economy:

The Army is cutting back on re-enlistment bonuses.

Effective Dec. 31, the number of Military Occupational Specialties that rate a Selective Reenlistment Bonus is dropping from 88 to 63, Army officials said.

Those specialties that no longer rate a bonus are at or near their manning needs, Army officials said.

The Army has also reduced the overall award levels for soldiers still eligible for bonuses, said Master Sgt. Patrick Johnson, the retention operations noncommissioned officer for the directorate for military personnel management of the deputy chief of staff, Army G-1.

The changes affect soldiers who re-enlist Dec. 31 or after, said Lt. Col. Thomas Erickson, chief of professional branch within Army G-1, who advised soldiers to “re-enlist before the new message takes effect.”

He could not say about how many soldiers will see their re-enlistment bonuses reduced or eliminated.  [Stars & Stripes]

Here are the MOS’s that will no longer receive a bonus:

Maybe now I'll see more enlisted guys driving around in 7-year-old cars like me instead of brand new luxury SUV's with spinning wheels.

That is money that can be well used for the bonuses of the GM, UAW, and Chrysler CEOs, lord knows how much they have suffered over the last month.

    Gerry,

You act as if the CEOs don't deserve a bonus. The CEO's purpose is to maximize profits and their bonus structure is designed to reflect this.

Sure, they could build quality, cutting-edge cars at a reasonable profit. But there is no product line which compares to the 100% profit of a government bailout. Further, a bailout has a much smaller carbon footprint than a manufacturing process.

Not only are the CEOs increasing profit percentage, they are saving the environment. These guys are real heros.

And you feel they deserve no bonus? Scrooge.

I agree the CEOs are really astute. I think they actually planned to arrive the first time in there jets and then let congress pretend to be tough guys and berate them. Them come back the second time to get the cash. Looks like a win win situation for both, the elected officials who pretend to be looking after the best interest of the tax payers and the CEOs who are looking after themselves. When large numbers of BILLIONS are involved I think each step is carefully thought out before hand. Again, these guys are smart enought to walk away with billions. And we think we are smart when we buy a new vehicle close to the "invoice" price.

    JAFO,

Who would have thought government bailouts are good for the environment?

By the way Ford to their credit turned down the government bailout money:

It makes me feel better about being a Ford owner since they are not leaching off the tax payers.
