When I was in the 2nd Infantry Division the boxing tournament was one of the must see athletic events of the year. Hopefully this new requirement, though understandable for its implementation, doesn’t decrease the number of people who participate in the event:
Soldiers wishing to compete in 2nd Infantry Division sporting events, such as wrestling and tae kwon do, must now receive clearance from a doctor no more than a week prior to the event.
The change adds an additional exam to the pre-fight screenings doctors were already performing at Morale, Welfare and Recreation sporting events, Installation Management Command-Korea spokesman Ed Johnson said Friday.
Division officials said the decision wasn’t based on the late September death of Army Pfc. Jason Price following a Camp Casey boxing match.
“We were examining this issue before the boxing event,” division spokesman Maj. Vincent Mitchell wrote in an e-mail to Stripes late Friday. “These requirements are an additional set of precautions to ensure we continue to take care of our soldiers.”
Price, who was in the 2nd Infantry Division’s Company C, 2nd Battalion, 9th Infantry, collapsed during the third round of his first and only boxing match. He was medevaced to the Brian Allgood Army Community hospital at Yongsan Garrison, where he was pronounced dead.
Mitchell said the division will not hold boxing matches until after the investigation of Price’s death is complete and the findings are analyzed. [Stars & Stripes]

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't these guys supposed to be all set to go fight wars? They got to get a check-up to see if they can box?

Classic knee-jerk reaction from the 0 defect occifer corps. It was a tragic incident but the soldier had health issues. I hope participation drops to null. There may be some soldiers who have sleep apnea, therefore they should be screened by a health proffesional before being allowed to nap.
Granny/Nanny state run amok.

“These requirements are an additional set of precautions to ensure we continue to take care of our soldiers.” Sure sure sure…
“Mitchell said the division will not hold boxing matches until after the investigation of Price’s death is complete and the findings are analyzed.”
Yeah, right.
I suggest wrapping every 2ID soldier in bubble wrap until such time it is determined that the Arch-Angel/Messiah Obama has blessed the well being of such said soldiers and determined they are not critical to the security of the United States, Korea, or Hawaii for that matter.

"Can someone tell me why U.S. Army soldiers always jump in in a fair fight?"
Army of One is just a stupid slogan made by stupid people. If the fight is fair, it means we need to bring bigger weapons and more fighter.

To the 2d Command:
Every time something like this happens, the events are always suspended for a review and we get the same outcome every single time. "Have a doctor look them over." For some idiotic reason, we let things fall by the wayside and when something like this happens again, its like it has never happened before. Shit happens – deal with it!
What a bunch of nabobs
