Greeting New Year at peak of Mt. Jiri: Mountaineers brave the snow and cold weather of minus 23 degrees Celsius to greet the first sunrise of the Year of the Ox on the 1,915-meter peak of Mr. Jiri Thursday morning. The peak is at the end of Korea’s 1,400 km backbone mountain range, called the White Head Great Range (Baekdu-daegan), the spiritual spine of the Korean Peninsula, which stretches to Mt. Baedu in North Korea. / Korea Times Photo by Shim Hyun-chul
It must have been absolutely freezing cold up there, but it looks like they had a great time celebrating the New Year on top of South Korea’s second highest mountain, Mt. Jir. Where ever everyone reading this is celebrating the New Year from I hope you all have a safe and happy New Year.

I was stationed at Palgonsan in 1973-74. I remember one frosty morning riding the duece and a half up the mountain with some of the korean workers. (I lived in the village below, with my future wife). When we got to the top of the mountain, it was recorded as -20 deg with a 50 mph wind. I had to walk only a short distance from the truck to the barracks, (100yds?) but half way there I seriously doubted if I was going to make it. Damn it was cold.
