North Korean Family of Four Defects to South Korea

The exodus of refugees from North Korea continues:

A North Korean family of four defected to South Korea on Tuesday night and is under questioning by military authorities.

The Navy said Wednesday that it found the family on a two-ton wooden boat in waters off the western port city of Incheon around 10:30 p.m.

Sources said they entered the South Korean waters three hours after leaving Haeju, Hwanghae Province, and have expressed their intentions to defect to the South.  [KBS Global]

Looking at Google Earth it is a straight line distance from Haeju to the DMZ of 30 miles which of course would be much longer considering they are floating on a raft.  The fact that a family of four can float that far without being detected by North Korean authorities just makes me wonder how decrepit North Korea’s maritime capabilities really are?

I am very happy for them and hope they find a future in South Korea. Under the previous administration I suspect things might have been different.
