Artistic Sex Scenes Coming to A Korean Movie Theatre Near You

The Korean Supreme Court has just made a ruling that will have a significant impact on the Korean movie industry:

The taboo surrounding sexual content in films is to be lifted as the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court recently ruled that the “restricted screening” rating — a powerful tool for film censorship — unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the import and distribution of U.S. film “Shortbus,” ruling to annul the “restricted screening” rating imposed on the movie by the Korea Media Rating Board, on Thursday last week. Restricted screening virtually means a film cannot be screened in regular movie theaters. Thanks to the court’s ruling, “Shortbus” can be screened in cinemas. The controversial movie graphically portrays non-simulated sex scenes, such as group sex and masturbation. It has played at numerous domestic and international film festivals, and has been recognized for its artistic merits by critics.

Korean films are likely to feature more vivid depictions of sex from after the ruling. Sex scenes in Korean movies have gradually become more liberated, despite a constant struggle with the censorship system. The 1956 film “Liberated Madame” was the first to present female sexuality onscreen, and an age of erotic movies began with “Madame Aema” in 1982.  [Chosun Ilbo]

How much do you want to bet that the progressives will use this as another chance to compare Lee Myung-bak with Chun Doo-hwan? Just as Dictator Chun used the Three S's (screen, s.e.x and sports) to divert the attention of the masses in the '80s, so, they will argue, is this obviously an attempt by Dictator Lee to use s.e.x to maintain his iron-fisted grasp upon society.

    Break out the candles already!

no-simulated sex scenes? What an interesting way to say full out porn with "ligit" actors exchanging fluids in front of the camera.

After watching "Lust Caution," a Chinese Film in 2007 here in Korea. I love to see that film "Shortbus" and create a real shocking disturbance in the maintream theatre. After all, I think it's time for Korea to really open up with it's depictions of sex on film now that they have ligitamate actors having real sex on film. That proves that pornography and feature film have now closed the gap. I love to meet the actors who did that extremly dirty sex scene and really expose them to their embarassement. Besides, several actors (expecially female stars) are all sluts.

Actually, they don't have sex. They embrace, rub their cheeks together, and move out of the frame (a device used well into the 21st century in Korean media) — and then their tryst is interrupted. If you want raunch, though, see the 2003 art film "A Good Lawyer's Wife," which could be seen as a remake of "Madame Freedom", but which wasn't nearly as popular.

A “neighsayer”? As in … Frau Blucher? (Horse whinnies in fear.)

    Or do you mean, “naysayer”?

Reading those comments about the woman stroking the horse really makes me smile… where is the time people were happy seeing a "less than 3 seconds" kiss on the cheak in some good old black and white movie? Bah, that's probalby all that internet-p0rn making them go crazy. LOL

I like many American movies but Shortbus is just very disgusting pornography. However, freedom is always the right choice. :x
