The New York Daily News has a real good article on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver Hines Ward for those not familiar with Ward’s life story and Korea background. Since becoming the Super Bowl XL MVP, Hines Ward has made yearly trips to Korea to work with his Helping Hands Foundation that helps bi-racial children in Korea.

Here is a stat from the article that hopefully Hines Ward’s involvement in Korea can turn around:
The Pearl S. Buck International foundation, which works with Ward to create awareness of discrimination against bi-racial children in Korea, estimated in 2006 that 9.4% of Amerasian children in Korea dropped out of school before finishing the elementary grades and 17.5% of Amerasian children dropped out of middle school due to discrimination and constant teasing. Those are disturbing numbers, since only 1.1% of typical Korean children dropped out before completing middle school.
No matter what people may think of Hines Ward on the football field, I think without a doubt everyone should respect what he has done off the field with his work with bi-racial children in Korea.
