I am not surprised in the least that Osan officials would jail the airman involved with the off post gun incident this past weekend:
The Air Force police officer accused of leaving Osan Air Base with a loaded handgun while off duty will be jailed pending the possible filing of criminal charges against him, officials said Wednesday.
The airman first class is a police officer with the 51st Security Forces Squadron, part of Osan’s 51st Fighter Wing. He allegedly checked out a 9 mm handgun from the unit armory and left base with two 15-round magazines sometime between 10 and 11 p.m. Jan. 30.
There were no injuries in the incident, which ended hours later after the squadron’s crisis negotiation team persuaded him to return to base. During the conversation he had talked of killing himself, wing officials have said.
He was to be placed in pretrial confinement at Camp Humphreys sometime Wednesday or Thursday, wing chief spokeswoman 1st Lt. Malinda C. Singleton said.
The wing’s legal staff was reviewing evidence in the case and would recommend to 51st Security Forces Squadron commander Lt. Col. Jon-Paul Mickle what charges could be preferred under U.S. military law.
It will be up to Mickle to decide “what charges will be brought and will not be brought against this person,” Singleton said. [Stars & Stripes]
I’m sure there will be an investigation into how the airman was able to check out a hand gun with 30 rounds of ammunition when he was off duty. I’m not an MP, but this sounds highly unusual to me for a soldier to be issued his weapon and ammunition while off duty.
