US & ROK Militaries Conduct Joint River Crossing Exercise

KBS Global today has pictures of a joint training exercise between the US 2nd Infantry Division and the ROK Army.  You can see the US tanks below maneuvering through the river bed while the Korean K1 tank provides over watch:

Here are K1 tanks beginning to ford the Hantan River:

The Hantan River is in Northern Gyeongi province, north of Dongducheon:

Here is another picture of the US M1’s moving through the river bed:

And here are more ROK Army tanks fording the river:

I did a lot of river crossing exercises while in 2ID, but we always used the pontoon bridges.  I never did a river fording exercise though.  I had to go deep into my photo archives on my computer to find this, but here is a picture of one of the river crossing exercises I did:

The picture is taken from the top of my Bradley and shows a pontoon bridge across the Imjim River.  If you look at the bottom right of the picture you can see two men.  One of them is former 2ID Commander General Russell Honore’ while the other one was my then Brigade Commander Colonel Joseph Martz who later became a General and the Assistant Division Commander of 2ID.

Anyway General Honore’ saw me stand up in my hatch to take this picture and he stopped my Bradley, jumped on the front of it, and chewed me out for taking a picture instead of being focused on the task at hand. For those that know General Honore’ the guy can cuss unlike anyone I have ever known before.

Needless to say I didn’t take any more river crossing pictures after that butt chewing that day.  That wasn’t even the first time I had been chewed out by General Honore’, but then again for those that have served around General Honore’ who hasn’t had their butt chewed out at least once?  At least he didn’t ask if I was Stuck on Stupid?

Since 50th Boat Company at Camp LaGuardia went away, planning for river crossings has become more of a challenge. The good news is that it has inspired the engineers to really look at the load capacity of various bridges and also riverbed analysis of more ford sites.

On my 1st tour in 60-61 as a Truck Driver, we had to do a lot of river fording from April-August. We had to ford the Hantan near Chon-gok and also near Rodriguez, since the bridge would often be either washed out, or under water. The bridges were replaced with much higher, permanent type when I returned in 69. The Enginers would have markers on each bank marking where we were to stay between when crossing.
