Citizens tour the Sungnyemun restoration site on February 10, the first anniversary of the fire that saw the destruction of the historic gate, which is commonly known as Namdaemun (Great South Gate). The Cultural Heritage Administration opened the site, which has been surrounded by a construction wall since the gate was destroyed, for a single day to allow people to see the restoration process, which the CHA says will be completed by December 2012. At over 600 years old, Sungnyemun is one of South Korea’s oldest cultural assets. It is listed as National Treasure No. 1. Photo by Kim Jong-su/The Hankyoreh.
