I agree juicy girls are a rip-off these days, but they are able to charge a premium for two basic reasons: language and location.

If a FOB GI were able to speak passable Korean, he could shlep all the way to a local RLD and get busy for a mere W70,000 or so. But it would be a very utilitarian experience and over with very quickly, despite all the effort involved in getting there (taxi? bus? long subway ride?).

The girls in the typical ville, on the other hand, are usually just a short stroll from the main gate of a base, and because they generally speak English, it's a more enjoyable experience hanging out with them. For that reason alone the premium may well be worth it, at least for some.

I didn't say it bothered me I said it was interesting. I would hope some GI's would read this and realize how ripped off they are getting before blowing so much money on juicy girl.

"The women have lower prices for the old Koreans because the old Koreans don’t have much money."

Not quite. It's because the street wenches around Chongmyo are 20 to 30 years older than the average juicy girl. If they were still 20 or 25 years old -- and reasonably hot -- they'd be pulling W200,000 to W300,000 a throw operating out of a room salon or deluxe massage parlor. No one is pulling tricks outdoors in the dead of winter amongst the geriatric set unless they have little other choice.

"What I also found interesting is that these ajushis buy their prostitutes for the same amount of money it costs a GI to buy a single drink for a juicy girl."

Does this truly bother you? The women have lower prices for the old Koreans because the old Koreans don't have much money. GIs pay such a high price for juicy girls because they're dumb and desperate enough to do it. It's the same principle as why Koreans pay so little for Korean-made cars while Americans pay so much for American-made cars.

Here I thought prostitution was illegal in Korea?

So how long will it be before these parks are off limits to military folks?

This is not as surprising as it would first seem. First off, the economic downturn has no doubt contributed to the increase in women seeking to supplement their income in the time-honored fashion (especially migrants from China who may be getting less factory or service-industry work of late). Second of all, the nationwide crackdown on prostitution that was first launched in Sept. 2004 under Roh Moo-hyun seems to have been reinvigorated under the Lee Myung-bak administration -- a well-known Christian, we might add. Naturally, the law of unintended consequences applies here.

However, what really makes this latest development in the area less than unusual is the fact there was actually a very famous RLD in the Chongno-3-ga area up until the early '70s, I believe, and literally right around the same warren of alleyways that lies to the West of the plaza in front of Chongmyo. It was Park Chung-hee who ordered it taken down, and replaced with the many jewelry shops that one sees there today. One might say, then, that what we see in front of Chongmyo today is something of a return of the repressed. Is there something about the spirits of all those dead kings and queens nearby that adds to the perverse energy of the area?

As for STDs, also hardly surprising at all. Anyone who has been to the plaza in the afternoon knows how absolutely stonkered on makkolli and soju the old-timers there tend to get. I'd be surprised if most of them can find the actual target they seek, let alone successfully wrap a protective sheath around their well-worn blade.
