North Korea Accuses US of Illegally Crossing MDL

» by GI Korea in: DMZ, North Korea

It looks like the North Koreans are continuing to set the conditions to provoke some kind of DMZ incident:

The North Korean military sent a message to the South Korea armed forces Sunday claiming the “provocative actions” of U.S. troops and “those in violation” of the armistice agreement were getting worse along the inter-Korean sea and land border. “If U.S. troops continue their arrogant actions in the DMZ, our military will respond resolutely,” the North Korean officer in charge of DMZ business was quoted as saying.

The North claimed U.S. troops crossed 30 m beyond the military demarcation line into the DMZ on the west coast on Jan. 5 and 21, taking photographs of guard posts and watching vehicles passing the MDL. “On 66 occasions until Feb. 20 since early this year, some 62 personnel and 58 vehicles have arbitrarily crossed 100 m beyond the MDL,” it said. The message said at a time when the two Koreas find themselves “almost on the brink of war” such actions by U.S. troops which it claimed had the “tacit consent of the South” could trigger a military clash.  [Chosun Ilbo]

These US troops taking these photographs must have been monitoring the land entry point where South Korean vehicles are authorized to travel to Kaesong in North Korea.

If the North Korean claim was correct they would have photographs of these soldiers crossing the MDL which right now they have provided no evidence of.  This is clearly just another way for them to raise tensions and when they do provoke an incident they can blame it on the US and South Koreans.

When did it become OK for USFK personnel to wear civilian clothing on trips to the DMZ? It used to be that everyone had to wear Class B’s, but I’ve heard that it’s now alright to wear Fubu and NASCAR jackets.

Sounds like typical DPRK crap to me, if they had any hard evidence, they would have produced it in a New York minute. Team Spirit time brings out the best in the short one, it’s his one time a year that he can get the attention of the forces in the area and he never fails to get his attention.

When I went to the Z, we had to wear our blues. Although I haven’t kept up with what has been going on in South Korea in quite a few years, I don’t see the US making that drastic a change from their previous policy.
