GI Korea in Hawaii

» by GI Korea in: Travelogs

One of the benefits of my job is that I occasionally take temporary duty (TDY) trips to Hawaii for work related reasons. I always enjoy the flight in on a clear day where the coastline of the islands can be seen:

The volcanic mountains of the islands are always a beautiful sight to see:

Though I have never been permanently statoned in Hawaii Iam becoming increasingly familiar with the island of Oahu due to my work related trips there.  Honolulu is a great city though densely populated.  Due to this dense population, traffic can be frustrating at times and trying to find parking, even on military bases, can be quite challenging.  In the case of the PACOM headquarters the parking is actually quite maddening.  Anyone that has ever tried to park there should know what I mean.

By the way something I didn’t realize until my latest trip to PACOM when it was pointed out to me is that PACOM has started their own blog.  It amazes me that PACOM is using a blogger account to blog instead of setting up their own domain and webhosting and the site is very plain, but I guess they need to start some where.

Anyway over the next few days I plan on showing some of the interesting locations around the island of Oahu that readers may find of interest.  Stay tuned.

I don’t think that there is any NASCAR on Oahu. Also, many of the Asian people you see in Hawaii are American. They may dislike you as much as the Koreans do, but you can’t attribute it to anti-Americanisms.

Just remember that when you are on official orders and you rent a car that car becomes an official government/military vehicle. It is true: my CSM told me so. It helps out when looking for a parking space!!!

Us folks from Hawaii only dislike people from Cali. They seem to forget they are not in Cali when they come to smoke their weed and surf.

As for the parking issue at PACOM, been there and roamed around looking for parking too. The problem is not limited to a Joint Command HQ either, HQ 7 AF, and HQ PACAF both have parking problems. At least in Korea, they let you park illegally, on sidewalks and in the grass.
