Picture of the Day: Honolulu’s Kawaiaha’o Church

kawaiahao-church-1

The beautiful Kawaiaha’o Church is located in downtown Honolulu, Hawaii and is the first Christian church to open in Hawaii:

“On July 21, 1842, 5,000 worshippers, led by Kamehameha III, gathered to dedicate this “Great Stone Church.” It became known as the “Westminster Abbey of the Pacific,” and during the days of the monarchy, it was called “The Church of the Ali‘i.” Today, it is often referred to as “The State Church of Hawai‘i.”

There is a nice Korean United Methodist Church near Honolulu/Waikiki that has some history. It is a modern wooden structure that looks great, but I believe it has a long history going back to some of the first Koreans to immigrate to the US (or what would become the US when Hawaii became a state). I believe it was this church (probably among a couple other Korean churches in Hawaii) that supported Syngman Rhee while he was in exile in the US.
